I just subjected my latest little diversion to some rust colouring.
I noticed on Semley the buffer stops are painted black. I would have thought they would be an interesting variety of rust colours.
Can anyone help me here? I thought of some black paint subjected to “chipping effect” treatment, so that rust shows though in vulnerable spots.
Thoughts?

You could try looking at
https://www.google.com/search?q=railway ... 252CzifoPc
which is what I go when I put "railway buffer stops" into Google. Lots of interesting pictures. The finish would of course depend on the period and how long the stops had been installed. Two of my efforts can be seen at https://www.scalefour.org/scaleforum/20 ... _7219.html One is ex LBSC one and a more modern BR type with different paint finishes.

I have a few minutes spare at the moment, a cup of tea, no milk or sugar, and a hot cross bun please!

The BR WR ones I was used to in the 1950s and 60s were black. I think that the 'paint' was actually bitumen; it didn't seem to chip, but then, what was going to cause such damage in the first place? Any derailment and/or collision, even at low speed, was likely to do enough damage to require rebuilding. I don't remember them ever showing any rust, however old they were.

That’s why I thought they would be solid rust - most contemporary pictures I’ve seen or buffer stops I’ve looked at were rust. The tar thing makes sense though....

Hi Dave - the LSWR one in the picture is from Martin Finney - sadly they are no longer in production and no one has taken over the tooling. I spoke to him a few months ago, and he still has the moulds somewhere. (If there is a commercial party interested, you should speak to him.) The kit is very well done, although the whitemetal castings do get distorted if not stored carefully, or you own a feline modelling assistant.
There is a later SR version available from Lanarkshire Models.

Thanks Neil. Lanarkshire Models are meant to be bring out the LSWR version but not heard from them regarding them.

Hurumph. The Ontario Typo Police.
Tried to fix it sir. Only partially successful.
To answer the question though, it’s when the waiter and Foody Goody brings out the deep fried scallops.
