Exactoscale Turnout Chairs

Postby John Donnelly » Thu Nov 14, 2019 11:14 am

Having only ever built turnouts from kits before, I'm embarking on making my own using ply sleepers and functional chairs. I appreciate that this is a basic question but can someone please confirm that ordering the following Exactoscale sets will give me enough chairs to build a single turnout:

4CH 501A 4mm scale chairs, A, B and C switches (1 set)
4CH 502A 4mm chairs, 1:5,6,7,8 & 10 common crossings (1 set)

Thanks

John

Hi,

You will of course need some running rail chairs, check rail chairs if you are using 3 or 4 bolt chairs and slide rail chairs (Modelu if 2 bolt).

I have to admit when I built my test track I didn't buy sets, just relevant packs some of which I cut and trimmed to suit .... bulk standard chairs (mine are Midland), a pack of bridge chairs, a pack of slide chairs, a pack of small chairs and pack of check chairs ...... If you are doing multiple turnouts this might be a more frugal approach ;) Others might take a different view :thumb

This is exactly how I do it as well. Check rail chairs I cut off one side, file down the little bit in the middle with a sanding stick until it's scale width and fit them alternately attached to the running rail and check rail, then glue the bit I cut off at the end when I'm tidying everything up.

It depends on what you want to achieve. If you use a kit you have the correct chairs for each position and there are some specialist ones in some places. Not using the right chair in the right place will not be noticeable from a normal viewing distance or even in most photos but there is a certain satisfaction - for me at least, in knowing that that particular part of the layout is "right". :)

That said, having built a number of kits and having lots of spares, some of those are bound to get used in places where they would not be found. :)

Hi
In a previous post Stephen Freeman mentioned that if wanting two bolt chairs for pointwork should look to Modelu. However, I can't see any reference to track components on the website. Can anybody help.

Further to my earlier query, I'm now at the point where I'm ready to build my first turnout, a left hand C8.

Looking at the Exactoscale chair position diagrams here: https://exactoscale.com/track-component ... positions/ they show the chairs at the switch end of the turnout and at the common crossing but not through the rest of the turnout.

I assume that, apart from where the check rails are, all other chairs on the turnout would be standard S1 chairs?

Apologies for what is a basic question but this is my first go at building a turnout with all the relevant special chairs.

Hi John,

If you download the appropriate template from elsewhere on this site all the different chair types are noted on the diagram. Hope this helps.
