It's a fascinating formation, and I'm still trying to work out if it counts as a turnout or half a diamond. I'm curious as too how the standard-gauge stock behaves: doesn't it run on its flanges though the first crossing? I wonder what that would do to the timbers and chairs in a full-size version. Is there a prototype?

Thanks Andy, ;) I just clobbered most of the rails bar the tops in Hammerite Direct to Rust paint and then weathered it. Nothing has fallen to bits yet so maybe a few more years will tell! Points and slips still working.

Hi Guy. :)
There is a prototype, if you watch the Vlog video it is shown there. I failed to show it in the Blog type entry due to having issues getting files off devices but you can see it in the video.
The standard gauge stuff sometimes dips a little in the gap as it is a bit big but most of the time they sail through fine. Unsure what you mean by running on its flanges.
If it wasn't such a rush job and it was built all nice at the desk with a template and stuff I'm sure it would look and operate better, the gap could be reduced by providing a bit more of a Set, as it happens I forgot and it is just a smooth curve from start to finish which probably explains the gap being bigger than desirable, but I'm happy generally with the result.

The fact it is working and bodged in by eye and force is a boon, time not wasted and now I can play with it. The 3 filled in gaps look bad though, must get a finer slitting disk.
I also have been mulling over whether it should be classed as a turnout or half diamond as it is a rather unique formation it seems.

Also on RMweb Horsetan picked me up, apparently the different gauges are fighting. Bloomin' grammar! Oh well, too late now init.

It's a fascinating formation, and I'm still trying to work out if it counts as a turnout or half a diamond.

In South Australia was called a gauge separation, there are also 'centralisers' and 'side changes' using similar fixed points.
See Image
for a pair of the fixed points, this is just a side swop rather than a separation, you can see the flange running leaves a rust spot on the rail head where the treads are lifted off.

Well done, Knuckles. Do you have any plans for OO9 stock?

In operation, it should be little different to stock riding over a crossing nose. They occur anywhere there is mixed gauge trackwork. Here is one in Argentina.

I am building some single blade turnouts that use the same principle for the bladeless side. It surprised me just how smooth the running is in the tests I have done so far..

.. but both roads are to P4 tolerances on mine, so I suppose it ought to be pretty good. ;)

Hmm, the only main difference on that photograph and the one I built is the furthest common crossing on mine and the photo' I was working from extended as a check rail of sorts where on yours there is non. I guess it might be a case of different geometry and it being less needed.

I saw your post on the single blade turnouts, very odd formation but I can see how it would work. Although my knowledge on track is still low but steadily growing the principle that the check rails pulls the wheels away rom the crossing nose in itself helped me make this formation as without that I probably would have built it even more wrong than it probably already is in areas.

Any plans for 009 stock? Not really to be honest. But now I'll no doubt buy a few bits. I don't plan on making any kits though, will try to keep it RTR as I have lost that luxury with P4 for the most part. It's nice to be able to plonk and run still in some way.

Knuckles,
Just to be clear there is only one common crossing in this formation (gauge separation), the other is a fixed point, (instead of a moving switchblade). Yours just looks a bit like a common crossing because of the extended check rails that are optional depending on the curvature of the track. it looks good anyway.

Ok, thanks for the correction. I thought all 'Vs' were Common Crossings, maybe it is because it isn't common in this case.

There is so much to learn about track. I've learnt most the terminology for standard points.

I only wish on this build those 3 rough areas were nice 'n' smooth like they should be as they let the look down.

That's what you get for a quick in situ bodge though!

Also thanks for clarifying the wiring for me on the other thread. :) (Some of you know which - I can't remember)
It was how I thought it should be but wasn't perfectly sure. Was pretty darn simple to wire up though thankfully.

Its not really a Vee, just looks a bit like one :) One side is a (fixed) switch rail, the other side is a checkrail and is optional. On a V crossing both sides are running rails, not just one side.

Also thanks for clarifying the wiring for me on the other thread.
You are welcome.

Any chance this thread along with my other loco threads can be deleted? Is absolutely no point keeping them here even for archive history as the threads are now nonsense without the pics. Forced to start over.

Still utterly sickened by Photobucket and what they have done, destroying everything. Can't stand seeing all my pages on all the forums have that poxy dial picture.

There's really no need for that, Knuckles, there are ways around the Photobucket situation. I've just zipped through the entire thread and i don't think there are any photos I can't see (certainly no placeholders with the Photobucket ransom demand). Hint - look for an add-on to your browser ...

For me, once you post on a forum and others take time to post as well it's no longer yours to chose to delete. When I left rmweb the admins deleted my new street thread instantly. I never requested it for that very reason and I felt they did the people who had contributed a disservice. I had backed it all up but that wasn't the point.

Yes there are gaps in this thread now but there's a lot of other content that I think should stay.

Can you please reveal which add on?

Also can OTHERS see the threads with pictures once installed?

I'm not bothered about myself. I want anyone on the web to see my posts as intended.

I did think of that and share your view to some degree. Many helpful contributions from you all much appreciated and a lot of great advice given. That said who is going to read my posts on construction when the pics are not there to make sense of it? Will anyone truly comprehend what they are reading and not get the wrong end of the stick.....sleeper...timber............one of iak's Black Adder 'Wibbles' there. :D

I can see both sides Knuckles. You are right it won't make a huge amount of sense in some cases, but your words are still there.

Just as a suggestion, if people want to see a specific image can they drop you a pm? That way you don't have to upload masses of stuff. Just the occasional few pictures as and when?

I used this link https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/photobucket-embedded-fix/ for Firefox. Had some troubles to start with but worked fine after I had cleared the browser cache (Options -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached web content -> Clear now) and restarted the browser. Fantastic! All the images in this thread now visible again, and those of Iain's lovely wagons elsewhere.

I also tried the add-on at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/photobucket-fix/?src=cb-dl-recentlyadded, but couldn't get this to work for me - YMMV

Many thanks for the help. I will after Scaleforum on Sunday or Monday look into downloading it and givijg it a whirl as I'm on my moby currently.

To Jim; I could do as you suggest as I still have the pic's on external HD yet I have trouble myself knowing what pics went where, both in this thread and others. Some descriptions are clear yet when confronted with several similar photographs I'm a bit buggered myself, let alone others. :S

IT WORKED!

Thankyou!

Took a long time to get around to it yet the Chrome fix was simple, literally click it and click the other 'clickit' = done.

Yesh!

May make a vid at some point, we all need this.

Many thanks. :thumb
