A new beginning and a new project

Postby Mike Garwood » Tue Mar 09, 2010 11:47 am

This months meeting hosted at the NMRS club rooms was a big learning curve for all concerned. Bernie Baker has put together the beginnings of a fledgling layout - based upon Gwenlais Junction and part of the attached colliery that worked in that vicinity.

Bernie and Mike Edmonds look over the signalling diagram that's been supplied.

Rod Hall has created the layout in Templot for Bernie, when I get a copy of the plan I'll post it here. So, in our area group we now have 4 new P4 layouts being built, that's' quiet something!
Dave Hagger has been busy with the timetable for Little Mill Junction. These are prototypical trains that have been taken from the 1955 and 1959 timetables and then the relevant research done to know what the train consisted of...be it freight or a passenger working. We all owe Dave and Rod a vote of thanks for all the hard work that's brought us to this stage of development.

After Dave had talked us through the movements, we took the printed fiddle yard into the hall to see if all the timetabled trains would fit in the yard. The dark lines outside of the area a length of freight wagons, 20 and 30, 30 wagons being equivalent to 10 mk1 coaches..roughly.

The long short and tall of all this is that, NO not all the planned movements fit in the fiddle yard. So Dave is going to try to reshape the timetable and Rod is going to try and see if the fiddle yard can be 'manipulated' to accommodate more trains.
More good news was that the homework given out last month returned satisfactorily made up...half track for the fiddle yard...so thanks to Tony, Mike and Rob for putting in the extra effort.

My thanks to NMRS for allowing us to continue to host our monthly gathering. Next month Steffan Lewis has consented to give a practical demonstration of using a bow pen. Now thats' something to really look forward to!

That certainly is something to look forward to. A bow pen in the right hands is like trying to fall off a bike with no handlebars. And a bow pen in the wrong hands is a bit like trying to complete the Tour d'France on a BMX bike. Any chance that this meeting could be Webcast as Merg have recently done for one of their meetings?

Don't know if we have the technology for that, something I'll have to look into, the alternative is to video it and put it up on You tube? Any other ideas welcome...

Having checked the centre there is not an ocsar point available - within a workable distance - of the work room. Next best thing is to video it and set links up to it via you tube.
