Newport MRS - NAGNAG Open Day Saturday 7th March 2015

Postby newport_rod » Sat Jan 10, 2015 6:45 pm

Newport MRS in association with NAGNAG (the Newport and Gwent Neighbourhood Area Group of the Scalefour Society) are holding our second* biennial open day on Saturday 7th March 2015 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Shaftesbury Community Centre in Evans Street, Newport, NP20 5LD

The open day isn’t meant to be an exhibition rather an opportunity to chat with fellow modellers and share a few experiences. The layouts won’t be operating as they would at a conventional exhibition giving visitors and club members alike a chance to swap tips and thoughts. Hopefully visitors will have the opportunity to run one or two of their locos too.

The emphasis will be on Scalefour, with Bernie Baker's Allt-y-Graban Road (http://www.scalefour.org/shows/S4SW2011/allt-y-graban.html, Mike Edmunds’ Cwm Du (http://www.cardiffmodelrail.org.uk/Cwm%20Du.htm), the micro-layouts created for the NMRS ‘P4 in A4’ initiative* and NMRS’s work-in-progress Little Mill Junction (with working fiddle yard but the remaining boards in bare-board state). 7mm will be represented with the club’s O gauge BR(SR) layout, Frecclesham.

Additionally Ian Penberth of PenBits Model Railways (http://www.penbits.co.uk) and Justin Newitt of Rumney Models (http://www.rumneymodels.co.uk) with be present with some of their wares and the Welsh Railways Research Circle (http://www.wrrc.org.uk) will be in attendance.

Admission will be free (but our Treasurer has never been known to turn down a donation). Light refreshments will be available during the day.

Naturally all Scalefour Society members and prospective members will we warmly welcomed.

*Details of our previous open day and ‘P4 in A4’ can be found in the Nagnag section of the Scalefour Forum and on the Newport MRS website http://www.newportmrs.co.uk

Dave

It's about half / three quarters a mile down hill.

Thanks for that Mike. In walking distance for those who are thinking of coming by train then.

Yes, it's an easy walk Dave.

If you leave the station at the southern side (city centre), turn left into Queensway. Just before you get to the old station building (now the Information Station) cross the road, turn left and immediately right into the old Station Approach.

At this point you will be favoured with a view of a 25' long low-relief brick sculpture of Newport Castle (the GWR 4-6-0, not the Norman fortification). Continue eastward in High Street towards the Old Castle roundabout. Take the pedestrian walkway under the roundabout. Here you will see a mosaic mural depicting scenes form the Monmouthshire Railway - including its brown and cream coaches - a livery that was later copied by some other railway, I believe. Turn left, northwards passing Newport Castle (the Norman fortification, not the GWR 4-6-0) and then under the South Wales Railway mainline.

Continue northwards over the footbridge for about 400 yards alongside the B4591 (see the map on the website) and as you approach Vanilla Spice (a large stone-built Indian Restaurant) turn right into Evans Street. The Shafesbury Community Centre is about 100 yards further on the left.

See you there,
Rod

This looks like a worthwhile day out - the chance to speak to the makers of some excellent models.

If I lived nearer I'd be very tempted to attend - and bring Belle View :)

...so presumably uphill on the way back! Will do my best to attend and travel by train. Any big sports events on at Cardiff that day which might cause trains to be rammed?

No, there's a little local match the day before, but on 7th everyone is likely to be at Gloucester watching the (rugby) Premiership game of the season, Cherry 'n Whites v Saints.

National Rail Enquiries shows direct services to England that day so we can assume that there are no plans to close the Tunnel for engineering work and replace services with buses along the M4. Always worth checking nearer the time just in case.

We should be OK: it’s a rest weekend for the Six Nations and Newport’s two professional sports sides, the Newport Gwent Dragons (rugby) and Newport County (soccer) are playing on the Sunday and away respectively.

I had to check - coming out of the station you're 51' above sea level and at the Community Centre it's 30'. So you face a 21' climb on the way home!

So be prepared to pin the brakes on the way down and whistle up for a banker on return.

With an average gradient of 1 in 126 only the heavier workings should encounter any problems.

Open Day Update

Chris Yates, who is building most of the baseboards for LMJ for us and who many S4 members will know from his articles in the MRJ, will also be at the open day. Like us he will see his boards all erected together for the first time.

He’ll also bring along a few bits and pieces for people to get their hands on and is happy to chat about baseboard matters.

Bit of a senior moment this morning! Staggered out of bed at the crack of dawn and started to get ready to wander down to the local station to pick up a train to Newport. Something didn't feel right and a check of my diary showed nothing planned for Saturday the 7th. Confusion reigned for a while then the penny dropped. It's not for another 4 weeks. Very confusing only having 28 days in the month. DOH!!! :?

You'll be all right next year - it's a leap year.

Good Idea, but not much help - we only hold our Open days in odd-numbered years!

Due to unforeseen circumstances Maindee East will not be at this year’s Open Day.
Instead, and a short notice, Bernie Baker has agreed to bring Allt-y-Graban Road (http://www.scalefour.org/shows/S4SW2011/allt-y-graban.html).
This being an Open Day rather than an exhibition Bernie will be instigating an Open Access Operator policy so if you’d like to run your (DCC) locos or stock on the layout bring them along.

At the risk of being branded a heretic, how difficult is car parking likely to be in the vicinity-ish?

There's parking at the back of the centre and loads of side street parking within the vicinity.

As an added attraction (yes! there's even more!) 4965 Rood Ashton Hall will be working through Newport on the same day, at 11:00 in the down direction and stopping in Newport from 15:30 to 15:50 just after the Open Day closes.

The footbridge mentioned in the directions above would provide an excellent vantage point as the train crosses the Usk River Bridge.
