Temporary Area Groups?

Postby chrisf » Sat Aug 08, 2015 6:06 pm

This is a potentially daft idea that I had after bumping into Bob Ellis in Sidmouth, where he and I were attending the FolkWeek. He mentioned that he had encountered another S4Soc member. In turn I had hoped to visit a member I know who lives there but night shifts [him, not me!] put paid to that one.

So I thought: wouldn't it be nice if members had the opportunity to meet up with kindred spirits whilst on holiday? For example, there would be a Sidmouth Area Group only in the first week in August [unless,of course, people go there at other times? I wouldn't know about that!] The idea is that interested members would meet in a tea shoppe or pub and socialise. Other resorts, last or otherwise, could play host to similar gatherings.

Hi Chris,

I think it's a great idea, but it would need a bit of 'willingness' on the part of those wanting to do it.

Success might also depend on how far ahead you like to plan. So if you knew in May, or earlier, that you were going to be in Sidmouth (in your example) in August, you'd have time to put a notice in July's Scalefour News. I could also supply you with a list of local members that you could potentially contact and of course you could start a thread on here.

Of course there's no guarantee that there will be any locals; there are 19 members with an EX postcode, 13 members within 25km of Sidmouth, but none at all in Sidmouth itself.

All the Best
Danny

Of course you can always go along and join a current group - while on holiday/work visit.

For example, I was in Nottingham for a week on work, asked a couple of questions on the forum and went to the inaugural meeting of the Nottingham area group. Then I was in Cornwall, but unfortunately I wasn't there at the same week as the area group meet.

The key thing is just ask the question.

Well we have said before if members are dropping into Melbourne we usually move meetings to allow them to join the locals. :D

This seems to be quite successful with the UK members who join us for the afternoon or evening! You know you are!

Well worth doing if you are in Melbourne. Heather and I were made very welcome when we were there a year or two back. Visits were arranged for us to several layouts, a meeting and we had some very pleasant evening meals; we made some new friends who we saw again the following year at Scaleforum. David Clift, Doug Newton and co were great hosts.

Thanks Phillip. We do enjoy having people here as it is hard and expensive to get to scaleforum so when people come this way it is nice for us to get their perspectives of modelling. I will say partners are always welcome too. Say to hi to Heather from us all!
