If you haven't come across Mike Smith's labour of love website about goods operation on UK railways before you might be interested in this.

I stumbled across it by accident.
There is so much of interest, I found it hard to decide where to put this post. In the end I decided to use the above title simply because I found the illustrations on this page particularly interesting. http://www.igg.org.uk/gansg/00-app1/rthdbike.htm
but then again almost any sub page off appendix 1 has something of interest. http://www.igg.org.uk/gansg/00-app1/001-index.htm
...... and theres loads more on this very extesive website.
This is probably old news to many people, but no one told me about it before
Enjoy. I did.

I imagine you won't get a lot of response over posting this link. However, whilst I already had it in my bookmarks folder, your post did remind me to go and revisit the site, which was a very useful reminder to not forget what we take for granted. Thank you.

That's an interesting link. I have been looking for a picture of a Road Gang of men using sledgehammers and and a metal pin to break up a road surface. I was told about this years ago: they stood in a circle and hammered the pin into the ground to break it up. Anyone have such a picture which them might be prepared to share?
