Tube storage - I am looking into it. Interestingly it appears to be the endcaps that are expensive, not the tubes - unless you buy a shed load!

Martin, did you get a message from me yesterday? I'm not sure it actually sent as I can't see any trace of it.

Andy,
My apology for being a part of the topic drift,

To help bring it back on track; Phil Atkinson's [Hobby Holidays]clear tubes are a good partner to your laser-cut products if the holes are of a suitable size.
The caps are 10.48mm Dia, the tube just over 8mm Dia so a hole size of 12 mm would do the job. The tubes are 325mm long, plus a bit for the cap. Phil uses his tubes to store brass small Dia brass sections. I also use them to protect fine paint brushes.

Thanks Les,
That's useful information. I'd been looking at narrower tubing (5mm ID), so knowing the dimensions of what Phil sells and therefore people already have is useful for altering the 'holey' parts.

Question - if rod/wire etc is stored in the tubes, would you put a stopper on the top? Reason for asking is that the stoppers for the bottom are cheap even for a smallish quantity but those that may be suitable for taking on and off would require purchasing nearly 3000 to get the cost reasonable.

Andy,
I prefer caps top and bottom, keeps everything under control when the container gets upended.

I sort of like the idea, but in my case at least I wonder where I'd put it. It's too deep to fit on my workbench and wouldn't really leave me enough room to do any work in front of it, particularly because I'm a very untidy worker. If you have drawers to open on the base that would be even worse. So I reckon that it would have to be stationed beside the workbench unless, of course, one happens to have a very wide bench. It's also a bit bitty and again, as an untidy worker, I reckon I'd muddle things up on it very quickly although a tidy worker would presumably have no such problems. There are really too many spaces for too many things in too small a space. And like Terry, I don't care for wire and sharp things such as files sticking up in the air. So sorry to be negative about what is basically a good idea, but as it stands it's not for me.

Hi David,
Thanks for the response. It's not an uncommon comment regarding workbench space. At some point we will introduce a slightly narrower version of the units though one of the reasons for starting the range was experience of a competitor's range being that they were too narrow to store a lot of the stuff I wanted to store. Drawers opening out - fully understand and I always viewed the main use of the storage/display unit (empty carcass really) to be to lift drawers clear of the work surface. I also keep playing with the idea of a shelving system to lift the units up and leave more of the workbench clear, but there's only so much time in the day!
This is a sample setup we did very early on. If you take the front edge of the A3 cutting mat as the front of the desk then everything fits into a 4' x 2' space - Image
Storage of wire - we are looking into the plastic tubes that have been mentioned.

Can you recommend any Terry? And if it's only viable in large quantities, maybe something the Stores can help with?

Rod,

I also got some from Phil at Hobby Holidays when he was doing exhibitions. Online only now. Search found them http://www.hobbyholidays.co.uk/search.p ... at=&sfil0=

Now out of stock, there is clearly a demand.

Very neat and tidy. I'm glad I don't have to clean and dust it though. I use two cheap desks for modelling, each with shelves one side and drawers the other; everything not in use goes in lidded boxes on the shelves or in the desk drawers, at least that's the theory :D.

Andy,

I got your email, and replied (via S4 administrator). But now my personal email has gone down (!!!)

So I am temporarily unable to receive and send emails. This may take a few days to sort out.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for confirming receipt of the message - so, I'm not going mad! I've not had anything back but perhaps it will come through when your email is working in. No worries about the wait.

It'll be interesting to see the price when he restocks as I'm struggling to match without buying what's probably a lifetime's supply. Unless he's already got a lifetime's supply and the stock level is just what has already been cut to length.

I'm sort of hoping there is quite a significant unmet demand, the fact they sold out so quick suggests there might be, and that anybody brave enough to take it on will find they can make a reasonable quick return on their investment. I checked the available suppliers too so I've got a fair idea what the problem is, hence my original post. To give you some idea, I would order 10 tubes.

Going back to option 2. Can it have 6 drawers then I’d store my plastikard off-cuts by thickness? you could even etch them 10,15,20,30,40,60

Hi, yes it could be produced with six drawers, but I think it would be a custom unit. Having drawn up boxes for Martin, I've started planning a more plastic orientated stand. It's very early days but the basics are that it would have three bins for evergreen strip either side of the unit with vertical slots between them to store plasticard in reducing height. This centre section would also have three draws of varying depth (not height) for storing smaller off-cuts. I've only just started laying the drawing out for this, so it will be next week before there's anything like something being cut for it.

Evergreen strip container

A month ago, I illustrated in this thread the very unsatisfactory temporary storage I had improvised for my Evergreen strip, and welcomed the potential for a better solution using the laser-cut parts from EBMA Hobby and Craft. This led to a discussion with Andy Goodman of a design for a single box that would contain the whole of my stock of Evergreen strip, plus miscellaneous other styrene sections, and which would also be more stable than the two thinner containers that I had been using that were forever falling over, wherever I propped them.

Andy kindly designed a suitable container to my specification, quoting a very reasonable price, and I then placed an order for this. It was promptly delivered by courier, and I quickly assembled it. The inner divisions do not require glueing, but Andy recommended the use of PVA wood glue to fix the sides and ends to the base and to each other, holding these parts together with masking tape while the glue dries. The fit of the parts is extremely accurate.

IMG_6486.JPG

I didn’t time the assembly process, but it certainly didn’t amount to more than 10 minutes, and has resulted in a strong and stable box, which keeps my Evergreen strip in good order, saving endless sifting through packets, which had always contrived to get mixed up in the old containers.

I specified 8 divisions (arranged 4 x 2). These contain (1) one (or in some cases two packets) each of #100 to #119, (2) #120 to #139, (3) #142 to #159, (4) #164 to #169, (5) #175 to #179, (6) #186 to #189 (and some miscellaneous packets behind), (7) rod, tube and various other sections between #211 and #285, and (8) miscellaneous other plastic rod and strip (Slater’s, Plastruct, etc.) These eight divisions provide adequate and reliable storage for a complete range of Evergreen strip, plus other sections.

IMG_6489.JPG

I can strongly recommend this Evergreen strip container to anyone who wants to store their strip in a stable container, in compartments that allow a particular strip to be quickly and easily found. Although this box was produced for me as a one-off order, I am sure Andy would be pleased to supply further boxes to order to this design (or to produce one-off variants to order).

(I have no connection with Andy Goodman or EBMA Hobby and Craft, other than as a very satisfied customer.)

The Material Stand is nearly ready to add to the website, just need to do the assembly instructions. However, I'm still working on the optional tubing. The longest metal rods that I've got are 335mm long with most being slightly shorter. The Evergreen strips are 360mm long, but would you not store these in their original packaging?
If you could let me know your thoughts it would really help the ordering of the tubing.

I certainly keep my Evergreen strips in the original packaging and have a simple home made holder for these but the same principle as the EBMA stand.
Thin wire (under 1.0mm dia) in 300mm lengths is kept in the plastic tubes from Hobby Holidays. Other small sections above 1mm dia or square live in a shallow drawer although one day I must work out something better. One point is that some metal sections are supplied in less than 300 mm lengths and there is always the problem of the part used length for the larger sizes, A stand with compartments for different lengths might help but would be more complicated to make so would presumably cost more. Perhaps a solution is a drawer unit with subdivisions?

Just a quick posting to say that the Material Stand is now available - https://www.ebmahobby.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_61&product_id=111
If anybody would like the Evergreen store produced for Martin Goodall drop us a line at info@ebmahobby.co.uk. It will at some point be added to the range, however, it could be two - three months to produce all the photographs, instructions and production drawings.

Pleased to say that we've finally received the plastic storage tubes today. These are 360mm long with an inside diameter of 7.6mm. The outside diameter of the caps is 11mm.
Cost of a tube and pair of caps is 40p with P&P at £3.00 for one to probably rather a lot of them. We've also just produced another batch of the Rod, Tube and Wire stores.
Storage tubes can be found here : https://www.ebmahobby.co.uk/index.php?r ... uct_id=114

I just wanted to say how delighted I am with my new EBMA storage set-up. I only wanted the material stand initially, but the little drawers are so useful...

I'll order some more in the new year.

Hopefully before Christmas (this year)! There are a couple of units we want to get into production for the crafting market, then we can get Martin's stand out to production. To be honest, it's the photographs and instruction writing that slows everything up.
