I have just spoken with George Watts. Some of the prices and postage have changed, so best to call before sending him an order.

Having recently seen the quality of rivets produced by one of George's tools compared to what I thought were acceptable by my own means thus far, I'm now seriously considering an imminent purchase. I've really only held back so far because of the lack of rivets on CR locos but that is short sighted.

However, there are 3 rivet tools on the price list. I presume the dearest one is for more serious muscle work in larger scales. Which should I be aiming for working solely in 4mm?

I have the £95 GW Universal one and I can highly recommend it. It comes complete with instructions and is easy to use. :thumb

Hello,
Here is an image of the universal press. The options for rivet patterns are remarkable. Straight or round patterns precisely.

Whilst I obviously do use mine for its intended purpose, I also use it far more for accurate marking out. The rivet indentations make excellent starting points for drilling holes and they can also be used to define the start and finish of scribed lines.
One needs to think very carefully about where all the indentations need to be sited and what their co-ordinates are (noting that one of wheels is effectively marked the wrong way round for normal x,y co-ordinates). One also needs to be careful to avoid backlash errors but this particular model isn't too bad in this respect, George told me that the larger "O gauge" riveter is much worse for backlash problems.

I have a universal rivet press, and love it. One of my best model engineering investments. One point, the handle can become uncomfortable after a few hundred presses, but a length of garden hose slipped over it makes a lot of difference!

Thanks for those that replied above and to Phil Hall who provided further info of line. Seems I should aim for the Universal.

Does anyone know if there is a more recent price list or is the 2021 version still current?

Thanks

I don't have an MRJ to hand, being between Swindon and Didcot on the 19.30 Temple Meads to Paddington...

But the obvious thought is to check the prices in George's latest advert in the MRJ. if the prices for the things that he advertises like the rolling bars and rivet punch haven't changed, then I suspect that nothing else has.

I don't know how easy it is to get hold of him on the phone, but that is always an alternative as well.

Good luck! It is worth it - definitely!

This is from MRJ 297, I bought a wheel press in September at that price and p&p. It was delivered very quickly.
