Exactoscale switch chairs E4CH 501A

Postby PeteT » Mon Aug 20, 2018 8:44 pm

Evening All,

I thought I'd start a new topic rather than sidetrack Andrew's thread on production news.

I'm busy doing some 'prettifying' in preparation for Scaleforum, & realise why I parked this job before!

I have 5 switch chair packs (E4CH 501A) and 5 B switches to finish off. The notes (which I downloaded some time ago from the C&L site) say the right hand rail of a right hand B switch uses 3 off part 12. Each pack meanwhile the sprues only includes 2 off.

Likewise for the left hand B switch, 3 off part 11 are required but only 2 are included.

Have I missed something here, or am I supposed to have a wider variety of switch types across the layout to balance out useage?!

Presuming I'm not being stupid, would anyone happen to have any spare parts? Or should I just substitute in parts 9 & 10 & hope nobody notices (queue everyone reading this to point it out... ;-)).

Thanks Andrew - those are what I'm working from. On the right hand B switch, positions 2PR, 3PR & 4PR all require part 12. While there are 4 of parts 5 & 6 which are also required 3 times, parts 11 & 12 are only supplied x2.

Thanks,
Pete

For completeness, to go with the diagrams Andrew uploaded, here are the sprues:

Of the 5 switches you are trying to make, how many are Right Handed & How Many Left-Handed?

If they are all the same hand, then you would need 15 chairs of the same type for that hand, but you will only have 10 chairs of that hand.

That is if you want to conform exactly to the diagram.

It seems to me that only difference between an 11 and a 12 is the "hand" of the key.

So if you are making a Right-Hand switch then the diagram indicates part number 12, which will then all have the key going the same way.

One solution would be to use a number 11 in the middle of the three, but it would have the key going the opposite way.

However, I also have 4 spare number 11 and 4 spare number 12, and would be happy to send you any or all of these if you PM me with your address.

Ah yes, of course! Who's an idiot? (for the avoidance of doubt, me).

I can't quite remember off hand but it is definitely 2 of each, therefore what the fifth is therefore reasonably irrelevant.

The keying is an interesting point though - as I would think on bi-directional lines they would be every other way? Or does it not work the same as plain track?

So thanks for the offer of chairs, and thanks for reminding me to do my overall maths properly!

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along in a moment with the correct advice on keying!

But at least you have solved your immediate problem.
