I've never heard of Mark Humfreys but I have used Bill Bedford's shorting strips successfully with Gibson wheels, both driving and bogey wheels.

I found that the secret for success was a hot iron, plenty of flux, low m.p. solder and a wad of wet tissue to cool the rim quickly before the plastic melts.

These are available from stores. There is an article in a forthcoming MRJ. There is no reason why they can't be used for Gibson wheels but just won't be able to drop completely behind the wheel.
