EM flanges for P4 wheels

Postby David Bigcheeseplant » Wed Apr 01, 2015 6:52 am

Following Martin Goodall discussion of using EM flanges on P4 track, The Scalefour Society will be adding nickel silver etched conversion discs that can added to the rear face of existing P4 wheels to increase the flange depth, currently these will only be for 3 foot and 3 foot 6 wheels, but hopefully the range can be expanded suggestions are welcome.

Something to do with the date perhaps?

In a reciprocal move, I see from their website that the EMGS has launched a new range of axle spacers with a length of 0.63 mm.

The intent is to aid those that wish to convert their existing EM models to run on prototypically accurate P4 track.

The spacers will be available in diameters of 2mm, 3mm and 1/8th inch, and each will include a slitting disc to enable easy insertion.

Rumour has it that if this new product is successful, a further set of conversion tools to aid those EM modellers moving from 18.2mm gauge to Irish 5'3" will be introduced on April 1 2016...

Cheers

David

I can see this would be a good seller, don't have to buy new wheels.

Presumably the etches will have a half etched section to register on the back of the existing wheel. This would also reduce the "lip" between the P4 flange and the extended "MG" flange.

A narrow slit in the etched flange extension would mean that they could be "flexed" over the axle, so removing the need to remove the wheelset.

What depth will the flange extensions be? An inch or two should provide sufficient depth.

There is no slot to twist them over the axle, if you don't want to remove a wheel, you need to heat the tyre up so they expand big enough to go over the wheel.

Alan Gibson is working on a flangeless wheel with a slight groove to allow a rubber flange to either P4 or EM profile to locate in the groove. This would be much easier to fil or even replace being like a profiled rubber band.

Martin has a lot to answer for.....
That would be an ecumenical matter.
