New layout - North Warwickshire Line

Postby daviditman » Sun May 23, 2021 7:55 am

I am about to start a new layout, and I am new to P4 and finescale modelling.
As I start to build the track, what track gauges and jigs would you all suggest I need?
I will be modelling Hall Green Station on the North Warwickshire Line so will need points and a single slip quite early in the build. The coal sidings, which I remember as a boy, make a good basis for an Inglenook shunting puzzle as well. There is excellent information on the Warwickshire Railways website.
Questions about engines (26xx, 56xx, and 57xx) and rolling stock will follow.

Hi David

Will be following with interest. Up until I was 10 the north Warwickshire line ran past the bottom of my garden. I was almost in sight of Shirley Station.

For track there’s a whole section devoted to it, best to start there (track and turnouts).
There’s also a neat little (and cheap book) on the NWL
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Story-North-Warwickshire-Line-1908-2008/dp/B003XRKBFQ

There were some very large engines that ran on the line (right up to 9f’s if your chosen period is late enough)

Cheers

Hello David, I shall look forward to reading of your progress on Hall Green as I lived in Petersfield Road as a small boy in the late forties. The house looks much the same today (on Streetview) as I remember it but I think Hall Green station has shrunk a little. All of my train spotting was done at Leamington Spa in 1949.

It is useful to have the switchblade and vee filing jigs that are available from the Scalefour stores, though an alternative method of producing the vee can be seen in a post by Brian Harrap on RMWeb at https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index ... ck/page/2/. You will need at least two triangular track gauges, a flangeway gauge and a checkrail gauge. I hope that this helps

Hi David

If you haven't done so yet have a look at David Clifts video on track building that he did as part of Vitual Scalefour North International https://youtu.be/bt_16KdrnQ4

Enjoy.

Hello David.
Some time ago I wrote up my methods of track construction here viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5727
I began with a list of the equipment I used, but you don't need all of it to produce track. The essentials are Track gauges of which there are several varieties available, and for pointwork a Crossing Flangeway gauge and a Check rail gauge. Some assorted files and a decent pair of rail cutters. These are common to all track building methods, including either soldered track or using functional chairs. The choice is yours. There are several topics on this forum covering different methods.
Don't be in a hurry to build any single slips until you have gained some experience building turnouts.

You will also need a Back to Back gauge for your rolling stock.

Regards
Tony.

David,

In addition to Tony's thread I would recommend Howard Bolton's S4 News articles in https://www.scalefour.org/members/newsarchive/dl.php?f=s4news194.pdf and https://www.scalefour.org/members/newsarchive/dl.php?f=s4news195.pdf

As well as track construction he details the building of a switch blade filing jig. Tony's thread details construction using ply and rivet whereas Howard uses functional plastic chairs. Knowing about each method will inform your choice of construction.

Also in S4 News 195 there is an article by Mark Tatlow on trackwork problem finding - it may be useful to know the pitfalls before you proceed.
