Conversion wheels for Hornby 2-HAL

Postby goatdriver » Sat Mar 18, 2017 7:22 pm

Greetings all. I'm very new to P4 and need some advice. I have a Hornby 2-HAL set and need help on a source and what type of conversion wheels to order (also any other parts I might need). Thanks from a member in the US.

I've a couple of these to do as well at some point soon. I can't remember if these should have 13mm or 14mm wheels.

Off top of my head the choices would be:

Alan Gibson, I can't remember if he does a pack for the HAL/BIL (they're the same drive line IIRC).
Ultrascale, again without looking at the website I can't remember if they do a pack, but probably do the suitable wheels. If like the 73, 13mm wheels are needed, then iirc this is only option to be correct. Though an 8+ month wait at present, and likely growing with each new order, they perhaps need to suspend sales and catch up???
Branchlines, the wheels they offer might be suited, but they have no internet presence.

There might be others, I'm sure others will be along to correct the above and offer other suggestions.

I found a couple of articles on converting the 2-BIL:

http://extra.southernelectric.org.uk/mo ... bil-2.html

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index. ... gie-to-p4/

Neither mentions exactly which wheels to use, although the second article shows how to use Ultrascale or Exactoscale wheels. I did find one article that states that the Class 205 (same chassis as 2-HAL and 2-BIL?) used 42 inch wheels, which works out to 14 mm. I can find Exactoscale wheels that are 43 inch prototype at C+L and 14 mm Alan Gibson disc wheels online. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I have done three of the Bachmann 2 EPB units and used Branchlines 14mm coach wheels.

We too have successfully converted 2-BILs and 2-HALs with Branchlines 'Black Beetle' 14mm wheels. They are now made in stainless steel.

Also from Charlie Petty at DC Kits. http://www.dckits-devideos.co.uk/shop/b ... _of_2_.php

These may be available in the US. If not you could order them from Australia. http://steameramodels.com/bbeetle.htm. I can't see P4 wheelsets listed but IIRC they are the manufacturers.

Thanks. I'll try D&E/DC tomorrow. I tried ordering online, but the order wouldn't go through. There are no suppliers for P4 wheels (or anything else P4-specific) in the US.
