Sutton’s Locomotive Workshop Class 25 Celebratory Event with Three P4 Layouts
Sutton’s Locomotive Workshop would like extend an open invitation to a free-to-enter celebratory event marking the imminent arrival of our brand-new Class 25 diesel model.
Friday 29th Sept to Sunday 1st Oct, 2023
Bentley Motors ‘Legends’ Centre, Crewe.
SLW are hosting an informal and relaxed gathering over a long weekend at which we will be displaying our full range of models. It will be a splendid opportunity to put names to faces and chat in person after such an unprecedented period of disruption in the hobby. As well as meeting the SLW team of Philip and Jennie, there will be the chance to learn about project progress and future plans. You can then enjoy the rest of the attractions and wallow in BR nostalgia over a cuppa and a custard cream!
Let’s be brutally honest… you don’t really want to trek to Crewe without seeing some trains running, do you? To make sure everyone goes away happy, SLW are delighted be able to provide what can only be described as a ‘private viewing’ of Barrowmore MRG’s impressive Mostyn layout. The 30ft by 24ft continuous-run P4 set-up recreates a section of the North Wales main line and provides instant time-travel back to 1977. There will be the chance to get up close and personal with the SLW Type 2s along with newly-completed rolling stock, lengthy train formations and full line-speed running of passenger expresses and Freightliners.
However, Mostyn is not be the only layout attraction. With a nod to the Scottish affiliations of many of our releases, SLW will also be welcoming Mark Tatlow’s fantastic Portchullin, an imaginary station on the edge of Loch Carron during the mid-1970s.
In addition, talented modeller and SLW customer Dave Roome will also be presenting his latest creation, Underhill Yard, an exquisite shunting layout set in the Scottish Highlands during the 1980s. With some marvellous stock, this exhibit is also heavily populated with modified SLW products!
That’s not all... Brian McCulloch (of Braeside Models) will be manning our Dioramas ‘The Works’ & ‘Inverurie’ as well as showing some impressive examples of his architectural modelling prowess. We will also have renumbering, weathering and detailing services on hand from JAVmar Resprays, who will be in attendance with a selection of their fine work.
We are thrilled to be staging this get-together in a true railway ‘capital’. As you may know, Crewe diesel depot is the spiritual home of the Class 24 & 25s, and was home to a large allocation in the 1970s and 1980s.

Re: Sutton’s Locomotive Workshop Class 25 Celebratory Event with Three P4 Layouts
Had a thoroughly enjoyable day in Crewe operating Porthchullin with Mark.
Great to have the opportunity to see Mostyn up close and have a long chat about operation and some of the huge quantity of very high quality stock.
Richard Oldfield’s recently completed Petroleum Coke hopper wagon rake was impressive in its consistency and character showing the detail differences in what was a small lot of modern wagons.
Good to hear that the late body Class 25s are only a few weeks away from delivery and I took the opportunity to order one of the newly launched early body Class 25s to upgrade the motive power in Wheal Elizabeth.
Looking forward to another enjoyable day tomorrow.

Looking forward to trundling up to Crewe in a short while. Should be a nice day out in general.
(Editor Gavin: I'll be taking lots of photos as usual and I'll include them with the Showcase photos when I sort through them if required so you can make use of them as you see fit).

Re: Sutton’s Locomotive Workshop Class 25 Celebratory Event with Three P4 Layouts
Well what can I say, what great weekend at the Sutton locomotive works symposium
It’s was such a nice friendly and relaxed event
Many thanks to Paul Spencer for being number two on layout.
Phil Sutton deserves a big thank you for putting on a fantastic event and inviting me and the layout on its first trip out and everyone who came and gave some great comments and also invites to shows.
Also to his mum for the endless cups of tea and all hard work she did over the weekend.
It was great to meet and see behind the scenes of Mostyn.
Portcullin looked great up close up.
Meeting so many like minded people and chatting about hobby made a it great time and putting faces to names too.
Phil released his latest class 25 which is a early duel braked version which of course will be a great model and well worth it, I just put my pre order in, you can never have enough rats on the layout.
Cheers

A day in the life of Mostyn, just over 24hrs since the last train ran at the Bentley launch, the layout is back in the clubroom under test/prep for the Spalding exhibition in November.
See you there...
