Unfortunately I'm not happy with any of my video footage - I should have trusted my phone rather than the compact camera. We will do a proper photo-shoot of Marsh Sidings and Lewes at some point in the future.

Having managed to get some fuel I attended the North Norfolk group open day. A good day supported by some excellent hospitality.

I attended the event at Yalding yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the couple of hours spent there.

I especially enjoyed a conversation with Ian Moon regarding 'entry level air brushing'; one of those mystical skills alien to those who have never summoned up the bravery to tackle.

Thanks to all, across the country, that helped to make these events happen.

Here are a few of my own photos from yesterday at the DRAG event, which was a brilliant day all round.

I was busy operating on John Farmer's 'Parkend Marsh Sidings' for most of the day and didn't really get my camera out in our part of the show, until Ian Harrison brought in his lovely '517' 0-4-2T and some area-appropriate private owner coal wagons, to give us a lovely 'back-dated' feel from the usual 1950s - 1960s period that we operate in:

It's tempting to call this one 'Ancient and Modern!':

But perhaps this would be more suitable for that title, taken during the last 5 minutes of the show, when Andrew Howlett's Class 170 emerges from the time portal in the fiddle yard and arrives with a 'Gricex':

David Smith's rather lovely Craftsman 02 also made a test run:

I would like to thank DRAG for hosting this event in the somewhat trying times that we currently live in. It was great to see John Farmers, Parkend sidings in the flesh, it exceeded my expectations from the photos seen.

I was also amazed at Rod Cameron's Lewes project, it's going to be a rather large layout. I think that he will have plenty to keep him busy for several years to come. It appears to be a bit of a team effort, as another DRAG member has started producing some of the signals required. He also will have plenty to keep him occupied, looking at the photos there's quite a lot of them. Best of luck and I look forward to following the progress.

I hope that Iain Rice's dog didn't get herself tied up in the furniture again.

Thanks gents.

May I enquire what scatter material is used on Parkend Marsh Sidings?
It's very convincing.

Thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed it. There is more detail on how Lewes got to this stage at https://www.scaleforum.org/demonstrator ... ron-lewes/, at least as far as the trackwork is concerned; and on https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index ... wes-in-p4/. There is also more on Adrian's signal construction at https://www.scaleforum.org/demonstrator ... e-signals/.

For health reasons I haven't done anything more on the track since July 2020, but I hope to recommence soon. In a way it's probably just as well because information acquired since then has meant a change in some alignments in the station, hence the mismatches between the platforms and Templot that might be apparent in the photos above. The original plan was done in Templot from a 1:1250 or 1:2500 OS map, and if that was all I was ever going to have all would have been right with the world. Then along came the acquisition of a station roof plan from Network Rail, which shifted some platform alignments, albeit by a pleasingly small and manageable amount. Similarly, the (then) new ability for Templot to do tandem turnouts changed some approach angles slightly and required some on-the-spot changes to some crossing positions. (This actually made more sense of the updated platform alignments!) Then about a year ago I acquired some extracts of a 1:480 station plan from the late Glen Woods and had them blown up to 4mm scale in a print shop. This forced a more significant change in alignments, especially on the Brighton side, so if I had laid more plain track much of it would have had to come up. Silver linings and all that. So now I will use the platforms to gauge the track through the station, moving outwards from the V.

Thank you Richard. The method evolved whilst applying static grass to the rather large amount of 'greenery' that we need for Balcombe!

Basically I make it by layering various lengths of static grass. If some really rough grassed areas are required, I start with gluing down hanging basket liner which is available by the metre on Ebay reasonably cheaply and then trimmed to the required height using a cheap pair of electric hair clippers. Scissors would be fine but we had a lot to do! The liner can be omitted if a less rough grass effect is needed, just apply the static grass directly to the basing glue.

I used to use a fast drying 'normal' PVA as a basing glue but have found that the 'specific' glue sold for the purpose (WWS scenics etc..) does work more effectively for me. The static fibres do seem to stand up better. One learns from from experience!

Then using Peco 'Layering Spray, apply 2mm basing grass, I use spring green but it would depend on the time of year that you're modelling. A second layer of the same followed by 4mm dead grass and a 'top coat' of 2mm fibres. The process can be continued until you've got the required height of the grasses. The combinations of length and colour is infinite so is best worked out to suit one's own requirements.

Then, using the machine, it's finished with a light covering of very fine sponge scatter (0.2mm > 0.7mm) sold by TheModelTreeShop.co.uk not the usual stuff available from scenic firms which I find too coarse for this purpose. Then waft over with the spray for a final fix.

I've learnt that using 10mm and 12mm fibres in a single layer was doomed to failure (at least by me!) so I now use the layering of fibres to achieve the best results.

What probably helps is that I use an RTS 'Greenkeeper' machine which pumps out 35kv as opposed to the usual 12>15kv machines. They're not cheap but to me worth every penny that I paid for mine.

Hope that this helps.
John

It would be interesting to see how many visitors there were at all the venues - for example aggregating the figures were there more than at a single pre 2019 Scaleforum?

I'm not sure the comparison would be particularly instructive Tim, given Covid and the absence of traders for starters.

FWIW in Devon we had 29 - 8 operator/demonstrators, 6 other DRAG members and 15 other visitors. My social distancing threshold of 40 was not threatened.

Just wanted to add my thanks to Rod and the DRAG team for a
Most enjoyable day out yesterday. It was lovely to see some familiar faces after 18 months of isolation! Can’t remember nattering quite so much for ages!

Thanks again

Thank you to Tony Williams and his colleagues in Manchester for making us most welcome in Dean Hall, the home of the Manchester Model railway society. Slattocks Junction is real credit to your collective endeavors, the wonderful Alpha Mill is simply stunning. If that wasn't enough, we also had the chance to look round the streets of Dewsbury Midland and watch the occasional train rattle by.

Nothing says welcome like a big mug of tea being thrust into your hands, thanks gents.

Also, Tony is the man that put us onto the Alan Jackson coupling (at one of Chris Kedgley skills days) and it was fitting to talk over and view examples of the coupling in the club that nurtured it. (With the portrait of Mr Jackson looking on).

Having seen Alpha Mill and what can be done in card, with a lazer...it makes you wonder if we'll all have one in 10 years time.
Cheers
Duncan

I think it could be useful - one of the criticisms of any exhibition is the location. If the exhibition is in many places that could tackle that comment.

I would to thank Gavin and the members who made me feel very welcome at Ludlow yesterday for the Shropshire and Herefordshire modellers day. Some very interesting projects on the go. Sadly I didn’t manage to get any photos but a great day.
Thank you all.
Cheers
Bill.

TVM to Rod for organising a grand day out and a preview of Lewes, Wow!
Also thanks to John Farmer for Park End sidings, which had lots of innovative features which I lapped up, photographed and will make use of on Dartmouth.
Apologies to Tim for interrupting the 16v ac or 12v dc while he evaluated a DiY controller.

There were other interesting things to see and lots of old friends tgo chat with, not least being Iain Rice who took me back to a Ratio wooden carriage kit of 1952 vintage. Good to see David Dornom in good form so we could compare notes on PaceMakers etc......

PS I have ordered some of the superior case clamps....ta for the link Rod.

It looks like all those who attended the various events had a good time so thanks are due to those who provided the entertainment and those who organised each event. We should also not forget Danny Cockling who stated the ball rolling. Sadly I had to give things a miss since a looming deadline to complete several projects that are due to appear in a forthcoming publication meant that I was unable to spare the time. :(

Hopefully in 2022 we will be able to stage a real Scaleforum.

I’d like to thank Rod Cameron, John Chambers, Mike Ainsworth, Tony Williams, Steve Hall and Gavin Clark along with all of their helpers who made all the actual arrangements at the six venues on Saturday. It all seems to have gone very well. I certainly had a great day out with the Kent Area Group in Yalding and I hope that everyone that was able to attend any of the events had an enjoyable and worthwhile day out.

Here’s a short video from the KAG event

Nice to see your No3 running Danny. I recognise the kit I built for John Brighton back in 2008 as an unpainted loco - it looks really smart and runs well.

A few more snaps from the North Norfolk area groups venue at Briston, we had 22 exhibitors/helpers in total, with roughly 40 plus visitors with people coming from as far as Bedford, Lincoln and Peterborough. I'm sure the lack of fuel locally/nationally didn't help though. Sadly Jim called late Friday night with car trouble so had to return to base. Alex and Will from Cavalex had their brand new 3d printed test shot of the new class 56 on show, very nice it was too :D

Cheers,
Tim

I do like the look of the test track you seem to have there, could someone kindly advise of it's provenance and dimensions, please?

Thanks Tim,

The test track uses my standard 1ft wide boards, think the dimensions are 10ft wide by 15ft long, overall. Should be a useful addition to our club nights being able to run stuff

Cheers,
