Scaleforum Multi-Venue Event

Postby dcockling » Mon Aug 23, 2021 10:54 pm

Following the cancellation of our intended Scaleforum event in High Wycombe there will now be a number of local events hosted by our Area Groups, at venues around the country, which will all take place on Saturday 25th September 2021.

All events are free to visit, but you must contact the relevant organiser to let them know that you would like to attend, this is not just for Covid safety, some of the venues have limits on numbers in any case.

If you would like to attend any of the events, please e-mail the relevant organiser at: scaleforum@scalefour.org

Event Details by Venue

Devon Riviera Area Group (Rod Cameron)
Holcombe Village Hall, Holcombe, DAWLISH EX7 0LF
Times: 11:00 – 16:00. Admission by pre-arranged free ticket

Attractions will include:
• Debut of John Farmer’s new layout Parkend Marsh Sidings
• The late John Watson’s Laxfield (see MRJ No.0) as a static exhibit prior to ‘rehabilitation’
• Work in progress of Rod Cameron’s Lewes
• Demonstrations on semaphore signal construction, wagons, specialist tools and road vehicles
It may be necessary to control numbers, so attendance will be by pre-arranged ticket only; please apply to Rod Cameron at: scaleforum@scalefour.org

Kent Area Group (Mike Ainsworth)
Old station building, Hampstead Lane, YALDING ME18 6HH
Opening times: 11:00 – 16:00. Admission free.

The station car park is small but it’s free of charge and there is usually plenty of space at weekends. Or you could come by train !
KAG’s long-in-the-gestation 1950s/60s BR(S) layout, Eridge, will be in operation so if you have any DCC-compatible P4 stock and would like to give it a run, bring it along. As well as the layout, the Marshlink Finescale Area Group will be joining us and bringing along some displays and demonstrations. We will also be able to supply you with tea and coffee (we promise) and cake (we hope).

For those concerned about what the Covid position might be by late September, we aren’t asking you to let us know in advance that you’re coming (well, not unless you’re bringing a coach party…) If numbers on the day should threaten to overwhelm us, we’ll happily point you towards one of the local pubs (we can recommend the Chequers) or the station platform to watch the full-size trains go by until things quieten down. We hope to see you on 25 September.

North Norfolk Area Group (John Chambers)
The Copeman Centre, Hall Street, BRISTON NR24 2LG
Opening times: 10:00 – 16:00. Admission free.

We hope to have our layout in progress, North Elmham, running with all trackwork completed. If time permits and we can complete it, we will also have our test track up and running.
It is hoped to have at least one other completed layout present as well as a number of demonstrations covering a wide variety of subjects.

West Yorkshire Area Group (Steve Hall)
St. Marys Church, Main Street, Badsworth, PONTEFRACT WF9 1AJ
Opening times: 12:00 – 17:30. Admission free.

Saturday afternoon workshop
The workshop is a chance for group members to bring along their latest modelling projects and work on them in the company of other like-minded modellers so that help and advice can be freely exchanged and we can catch up on the latest modelling gossip.
Tea/Coffee and cakes are all provided.

Shropshire & Herefordshire Area Group (Gavin Clark)
Bishop Mascall Centre, Lower Galdeford, LUDLOW SY8 1RZ
Opening times: 10:00 – 17:00. Admission free.

Saturday afternoon workshop
The Shropshire & Herefordshire Area Group (SHAG) will be holding one of its occasional ‘Modelling Days’ in Ludlow as part of the wider Marches Finescale Group, for those who will be feeling the pain of another Scaleforum-absent year. Normal rules will apply - turn up, claim a table, and spend the day modelling - only
interrupted by banter from the rest of the attendees! Numbers are limited not by the dreaded virus, but by the size of the room we have been able to hire, so if you are local and want to come along, please let Gavin know beforehand.

Manchester Area Group (Tony Williams)
Dean Hall, 39 Mersey Road, SALE M33 6HL
Opening Times: 10:30 – 17:30. Admission free.

The MMRS P4 layout, Slattocks Junction will be operating and the Society Library will be open. In addition, there will be informal demonstrations on laser cutting, model buildings and layout lighting.

Updates to follow as they become available

All the Best

Loves to see Rod Cameron's Lewes layout and the viaduct out again.... Can we have video up on Youtube????

Actually in all seriousness can people put video up on Youtube it doesn't have to wonderfully edited as it makes it a way the over seas members can see some great modelling.

Any how have a great time getting together.

Thanks Doug, Lewes will be very much in mockup mode (with the trackwork from what was shown last year); the viaduct won't be up but John and I would also like to see it out again one day!

I will be photographing and videoing the DRAG event so there will be something up on YouTube shortly afterwards.

The demo on specialist tools and road vehicles is now replaced by a demo on coupling systems and a display of 'finescale history' by Iain Rice.

Thanks Rod. I can still remember 2011 when you had a 4 CEP running backwards and forwards on the viaduct... a fabulous model. I have recently watched a video on YouTube of a train running across the viaduct recently.

Thanks again Doug

I did a consolidated video of the viaduct and Balcombe - is this the one you refer to?

There's a short video of a powered track test of the outer double junction at Lewes. If I have time I'll get the other junction wired up for the event.

Indeed, thanks Doug.

Apologies for the crackly sound!

There is still much to do with the layout but we are really looking forward to getting out on the road once again as soon as the situation regarding future exhibitions becomes clearer.

Always great to see such videos. It's the first time I have seen one with Balcombe station and I didn't realise it was the other side of the layout to the the viaduct. Those CCTV cameras weren't half massive in those days https://youtu.be/sts-HyvihjQ?t=296 ;)

Looking forward to seeing Lewes develop. Thanks for posting these and I look forward to more.

Rod, I have enjoyed that video a couple of times. The time I saw it in person was when it was just the viaduct and the train on shuttle. It was impressive back then and still is today. :thumb

I am looking forward to the next time I can get to the Uk again... it will be once both kids have finished school in 3 years or so. I think Lyn and I can trust them to look after themselves and the house while we are away! :o :o We may even be out of all this COVID stuff.

The Videos are as close as I can get at the moment (is this a new type of social distancing???)

The shots of Lewes look great.

Decision time. Which event to attend? Norfolk in the morning and Kent in the afternoon? Or perhaps a trip to sunny Manchester? Whichever it is there is bound to be fine modelling at all of them and the others of course.

Sadly, this is not a problem for those of us in the antipodes. Best wishes for a very successful decentralised Scaleforum.

Alas no Les.

I did try and spoke to Chris McCarthy, now Secretary of the East Scotland Group who advised that it wouldn't be possible for them to take part due to the attitude of local authorities who were not willing to take bookings for venues at that time. Additionally Chris felt that their layouts had been in store for too long to just get them out and expect them to work without some lengthy maintenance and that was also a high degree of caution amongst the group over Covid at the time that we talked.

If anyone or any of our groups still want to organise and add an event, please let me know.

All the Best

Danny,
Thank you for the update, it is as I suspected, given that there is still so much uncertainty about restrictions, and limitations up here.

:thumb However, it looks like the Aberdeen exhibition will be going ahead at the end of October.

The Elgin MRC have announced that the ModelFair event will go ahead on 6/7 November 21.

Probable a bit too far John! :( What the group is offering does however look very interesting.

Another event that is planned to happen at the start of October, but a lot further south, is the Great Electric Train Show due to take place at the Marshall arena in Milton Keynes on October 9th/10th. Simon and I will be there with a display which will focus mainly on wagons including some of those that have featured in my recent articles, along with many more. It looks that the safety arrangements to prevent infection have been thought through quite well so it could well be successful.

Here is an update on the North Norfolk Event:

The North Norfolk Area Group of the Scalefour Society is holding an Open Day on Saturday 25th September 2021 at

The Copeman Centre, Hall Road, Briston, NR24 2LG.
Opening times are from 1000 until 1600 hrs.
Light refreshments will be available and for this venue there is no need to pre-book.

The following layouts will be present:

North Elmham – Currently under construction by the North Norfolk Area Group, this layout will depict the station on the Wells next the Sea branch with its Grain and Milk traffic giving some variety from the norm. The layout will be set in the late 50s/early 60s period.

Obbekaer – A Danish independent line connecting Rebe, Gram and Vojens in South Jutland from Geraint Hughes set in the mid 50s. The Model in built to P87 standards.

Wheal Elizabeth – The end of a Cornish China Clay branch set in the late 1970s/early 80s from Jeremy Good.

We will also have the North Norfolk Area Group’s test track available for those who want to give their stock the chance to stretch its legs.

We will have six demonstrations, which are:

Modelling road vehicles – Jim Smith-Wright

Air-braked wagons – Phil Eames

Etched brass carriage construction – Tony Brenchley

Kit-bashing plastic coach kits – Alan Hall

Turnouts with a difference, an approach to building the inter-laced variety – John Geggie

Cavelex Models – will be showing production models and their latest samples for visitors to examine and will be very happy to discuss any aspect of their products

John Chambers also advises that at this event there is no need to pre-book

All the Best
Danny

Regarding the demonstrations at the DRAG event at Holcombe near Dawlish, specialist tools and road vehicles is replaced by a demonstration of various coupling systems and a display of 'finescale history' by Iain Rice.

Chris Webber has asked me to post an update to the information recently published in Scalefour News

Discount for Society Members for Scaleforum MSWJ Railway - Special Running Weekend, 2nd / 3rd October 2021

It is sixty years ago - September 1961 - since the Midland and South-Western Junction Railway route between Cheltenham and Andover Junction closed for both freight and passenger traffic.

Originally, we had hoped to formally open our representation of this line to mark this occasion, but this will be postponed into the future. However, we have a number of trains ready to roll, and the infrastructure, if not the scenic surround, is also tried and tested. We therefore intend to run the line over the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of 2nd / 3rd October; for us this will be our only Sunday opening this year.

As well as marking the anniversary of this sad occasion we are also offering a 50% discounted entry to card-carrying members of the Scalefour Society, as a contribution to their planned Multi-Event Scaleforum (actually the weekend before, but that date had conflicted with other activities, both at Pendon and elsewhere). This will be the only time in 2021 that members of the public will be able to see this line in action at Pendon.

This independent-minded concern was always a thorn in the side of the GWR and saw traffic from its' great rivals, the Midland and the South Western Railways use the line to penetrate the heart of GWR territory to reach Southampton. The line was heavily used in both the First and Second World Wars but was run down in the 1950s as it lost traffic to the roads and railways and fell from political favour.

Pendon Museum is near Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX1 4QD

As the Scale forum multi location event is occurring, Does any one know if the stores will be running there "non attendance" specials again? The last couple there has been the nice surprise of the "no postage" specials? :thumb

Hi Doug

Yes, you and your fellow antipodeans (indeed all our members) can damage your credit cards again this coming weekend :D and the Society will meet the postage - the nearest we can offer to buying stuff "in person" at a real show, sadly :( - at least for now.....
