35th Uckfield Model Railway Exhibition - 19/20 October

Postby adrianmc » Mon Oct 14, 2019 3:40 pm

Dear All,

The Uckfield Model Railway Club will be presenting the 35th Uckfield Model Railway Exhibition this weekend the 19th & 20th October and will once again be featuring a selection of some of the best quality layouts around. There will be full trade support as well as Demonstration & Engineering stands. Licensed Restaurant within the Civic Centre will be open throughout the weekend.

Uckfield Civic Centre, Civic Approach, Uckfield, East Sussex TN22 1AE - Open 10am till 5pm both days

The show is scheduled to have two P4 layouts: Lambourn from Pete & Jeff Day and Elcot Road from Simon Bendall.

Lambourn was originally started by Ian Harrison way back in 1979 and featured in Model Railway Journal No. 23 which was published in 1988. The layout was then acquired by Alan Ketley who made several modifications, some major, before it was packed away for nearly 30 years! We believe one of its last public appearances in this form was at Scaleforum in 1989.

The layout will be appearing alongside another model of Lambourn - a 2mm finescale version exhibited by Richard Wilson.

Also of interest may be the latest creation from Vincent de Bode more often associated with his GER P4 layout Flintfield. Vincent, along with a couple of friends has created De Graafstroom in P87n3.5 depicting a Dutch 3ft 6in gauge tramway. Making its UK debut the layout features several working features including a sailing barge, swan, lifting bridge and of course the trains.

Further details from the Club website at http://www.uckfieldmrc.co.uk/exhibition.html

Regards

Adrian

I wish I could get there to see De Graafstroom, but I'll have to be content with watching the videos!

Lambourn at Scaleforum 1989!

I think Alan added the embankment leading to the station.

Vincent's new layout is up to his usual high standards. Watching the video what happens to the swan which seems to be on a collision course with the Tjalk?

The swan and tjalk work on two completely different systems - the swan is a belt/magnet under the baseboard and the tjalk is self propelling following an inset wire. Now I don't know whether they can collide or not - depends whether the installations do cross - but if they do get too close during their travels I would imagine the easiest thing is to turn off the motor driving the swan's belt. Something to have a conversation with Vincent about?

Alan added an additional board to the scenic side in between the fiddle yard and the station approach. This was to help the visual look by preventing locomotives during shunting disappearing "off stage". He also increased the length of the station board to include the weigh bridge, office and station approach. The fiddle yard was also replaced with a turntable to prevent any stock from being handled.

For its appearance at Uckfield this weekend major refurbishment has taken place including the permanent joining together of the two scenic boards closest to the fiddle yard to create one, and creating an infill piece to blend the boards together. The layout is now DCC.

Alan is due to visit the show over the weekend to see what the team has got up to!

It is great to see my Lambourn layout coming out of retirement after such a long absence. I passed the layout on to Alan Ketley in 1988, and I knew that he exhibited it in the next year or so, but wasn't aware of what happened after that, until Jeff Day made contact with me last year to say that the layout was now with him.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to Uckfield this weekend, so I wish Jeff and his team all the best for the show.

I attach a few photos of Lambourn as the layout was in the mid 1980s at the time I was taking it to exhibition. Apologies for the image quality, and the rather prominent wallpaper pattern!

Most of the stock shown is still with me, and now in use on my emerging layout of Dulverton.

The other P4 layout attending is Simon Bendall's Elcot Road - pictured here at Scaleforum 2013.

The construction of Elcot Road was described in Scalefour News 209 so its appearance at the Uckfield show gives an opportunity to for it to be seen for real. The picture Adrian has posted gives a good view of the station building, referred to in the article, built about 38 years ago in hand scribed plastic with each brick individually painted. There have been a few additions to the layout since 2013.

......I'll be there too if anyone wishes to give me abuse (that list is normally lengthy.....).

With a narrow gauge offering of coal/coke grot which, because it is the Spa Valley Railway Beer Festival the same weekend, might have a foreground like this:

300 mile round trip - a tad far methinks, but I'd have liked to come.

Sorry you can't make Tim - agree 300 miles is a long way.

Its only a 72 mile round trip for me - and they keep telling me that I'm supposed to be there as I'm the Exhibition Manager!

I'm looking forward to taking the Scale 4x4 (i.e 16mm) Fen End Pit to Uckfield.

I'm also looking forward to seeing the other layouts and talking about my P4 Stour Valley line.

That's six layouts attending mentioned/pictured:

Lambourn P4
Elcot Road P4
Lambourn 2mm
De Graafstroom P87n3.5
Bottom Works Sidings 00
Fen End Pit 16mm

So how about two more - Blueball Summit (British N) and Midland in Bristol (0) - both feature in the latest MRJ No. 274.

MRJ274.jpg

The aforementioned Bottom Works Sidings also appears in the edition's picture feature Cameo Gems and elsewhere.

Maybe something is worth a 300 mile round trip - Tim?

Look forward to meeting you Chris.

According to National Rail Enquiries everything looks good on the Uckfield line this weekend.

A few years ago we used to get regular Engineering Works scheduled for the show weekend but we have been blessed with a normal service for at least the last three years - reaches for some wood to touch!
