But it might also be worth reflecting that a topic which is now discussing the viability and potential benefit of name tags is getting more engagement from the forum users than some of the more serious topics. I do hope this excursion into triviality is soon resolved.

If agreement on id badges is not acheivable a backstop (!!) of an MC who could announce those entering the hall over the PA might be considered.

Alternatively the committee might form a receiving line which anybody else could tag on the end of. The adoption of a special handshake would identify members from others.

I'm not.keen on badges myself as.you often need to stoop to read them especially if on an overlong lanyard. This risks arrest. They can also become entangled in clothing and glasses cords. If clipped to a clothing they can fall off. And lastly if not sufficiently large are unreadable without invading personal space.

May I therefore propose a head band. This would be about 4 inches in depth to ensure an adequate sized font. The band would need to be made from the same stuff as those coloured wrist bands issued at some shows thus being entirely adjustable to suit different sized heads. Different colours could be used each year. The headband would also be useful as pass-out and avoid the ink used on ink stamps fading or being washed off. If necessary S4S members could have a different colour, or design - perhaps a feather or plume erect at the front. Different exhibition status that is to say -committee, steward, exhibitor, demonstrator, member, heretic, could each have a different colour plume thus being instantly recognisable The non member headband would be sans-plume.

The above are only a few of the advantages the wearing of headbands would confer which if coupled with the MC's announcements would certainly have a major impact on the society's forums.

Consider the proposal adopted for 2020, with added LED lighting for the visually impaired....

I do believe this has already been trialled by one of the Northern area groups but it was deemed to be unsuccessful.

Yes, I do see this as a good idea - & so have added one accordingly!

OK but sun darkened your specs so you appear to have joined the Mafia !
Since S4Um is usually less sunny you would be better recognised via a new piccie done in a darker place.
You will be in the ideal location tonight 8-)

You lot can laugh! However, I'm now going to be at Scaleforum, wearing my name badge, so I expect you all to say hello (even if I won't have the slightest idea who you are!).

And good for you David. I shall certainly make a point of greeting you if I see you as I'm sure others will.

But do remember that there are many members who will have not engaged with this thread because either they don't use the forum or they have not followed it and thus have absolutely no idea what the 'fuss' is about.

Btw most on here no idea who I am. It's probably best that way........ 8-)

Are you saying the sun won't be brightening S4um? (no comments about where it may be shining from  !)

No pleasing some people... :P

If I have been staying overnight for an exhibition, I've always made for the local real ale pubs and usually manage to run into fellow modellers, no badge needed. Beer and model railways seem to go hand in hand. In Aylesbury that tends to be the Hop Pole. And the twice that I have been to Wakefield, Fernandes Bar.

Phil.

Edit to add Wakefield.

Most times the sun is out at Scaleforum. At least, I usually manage an ice cream! And David, do please make yourself known if we cross paths. I will have a badge, mostly because the organisers provide us helpers with one. I suspect sometimes it’s in case I forget that I am the ‘official’ photographer. Although these days I also use the iPhone!

Well, I'm extraordinarily handsome, irresistable to women, have a terrific head of hair, and don't really look my 42 years.

And I sometimes tell lies.

Seriously, I can't remember when someone last took a photo of me - in our household we don't have smart phones so no selfies and even although we've got perfectly decent cameras we don't seem to take photos of ourselves. If anyone is really interested there is a photo of me in the "All Around the Show" retrospective for Scalefour North 2013 - I think it's photo number 11 where I'm accompanied by Peter Heald and Colin Stevenson. (We're all wearing name badges :D :D :D )

In Wakefield, the Bull and Fairhouse offered a splendid combination of excellent beers and live bands until its untimely closure. I see it's now re-opened as the Polka Hop. As this is a species of morris dance I fear it may not have regained its former ambience.

I've never danced Morris, John, but in my younger days in London I used to know quite a few Morris dancers [mostly female] from both Cotswold and North West England Clog traditions, but I don't remember ever having heard the term Polka Hop. A check on the internet suggests it's possibly from the USA; the Polka itself is central European in origin. It wouldn't be unknown for a pub to have a more or less 'resident' Morris side, but what that does for the ambience I couldn't say. It usually increased beer sales, though, I gathered....

The Pennsylvania Polka features quite prominently in the film Groundhog Day, perhaps every day is the same in Wakefield  certainly Scalefour North always seems to be taking place whenever I go there.

All the Best

Clearly, none of you on this thread ever benefited from the bit of sex education I received long ago from a favourite uncle :
Try anything once except incest and Morris Dancing

I've been through the far from splendid isolation on Saturday night at a two-day show far too often. I am minded to do that again this year. Head on block time: if anyone has nothing better to do on S4um Saturday night send me a PM and we'll try and sort something out.

It is nearly time to do something about this, especially as I have received some PMs! As there is already a thread entitled "Scaleforum 2019 - the social side", let us carry on the discussion and make the arrangements in that place - but not before I return from a badly needed holiday in a couple of weeks.

The website now has details of the track building workshops, and a wide range of demonstrations.

It seems I allowed a typo to creep into the workshop details, and the price of the Turnout Construction workshop should have been listed as £3 (it was always correct in Scalefour News...).

I've also clarified that they need to be booked in advance by contacting Terry. I've only listed an email address on the web page, but members can refer to the blue sheet for lots of ways to reach Terry!

The show page should now be correct!

Um, I’m not restricting myself to the diesel electric era. Never said I was, dunno where that’s come from!

I’m not restricting myself to RTR stuff either, never said I was, so I dunno where that came from either!
