British 4mm Fine-scale Railway Modelling

Explaining its evolution

Celebrating the Scalefour Society.

From 2 June to 2 December 2018
The exhibition outlines the story of how finescale railway modelling evolved from the crude early models of the Edwardian era, through commercial models of the interwar years, to the major advances made in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly highlighting the impact made by Protofour.

Using text, pictures, models and components, the displays allow visitors to follow the concepts and developments during that period. Pendon has its part to play in this story, but of course many others have contributed to the quality of current railway modelling and operation.

The exhibition is accessible during Pendon’s normal opening times as part of the standard admission.

There will be several special events:
- The weekend of 2nd/3rd June will feature two P4 exhibition layouts, Lower Exbury and St Merryn, offering the chance to view their operation in a relaxed environment and speak with their owners

- The weekend of 1st/2nd December will feature the iconic P4 layout Bodmin.

I am sure this will be an interesting event to visit. However it seems a pity that no P4 layouts representing models of the diesel and electric period are included. There are sufficient layouts of modest size representing D&E prototypes that could have been invited. Perhaps the concepts and developments will include such things as accurate flat bottom rail track to P4 standards or sprung chassis for diesel outline models, both of which are available and represent major developments - or perhaps they won't

1 & 2 DECEMBER 2018: DIESELS IN THE VALE

Pendon will wind the clock forward to the early 1960s and show a small selection of trains hauled by diesel traction. These trains will run every half an hour interlaced between the usual GWR displays. This will show the modernising attempts of the Western Region allowing comparisons to be drawn with earlier services.

This will also be the same weekend that Pendon are hosting the NLG’s P4 model of Bodmin GWR operating in 1928 – a chance to get up close to a Cornish branch terminus / junction.

Do you think they will allow me to run a GWR 800 set to bring it right up to date?
