Postby garethevans1986 » Mon Oct 02, 2017 12:13 pm

The Barrowmore Group will be there with Mostyn (P4, 1977, BR Blue Diesels) if anybody is about :) Come and say hello and see our new semi-top secret DCC project :D

Looking forward to it.

Shall be there with Natalie helping with a couple of other DEMU operated layouts in attendance. Should be a good show.

If people attending haven't visited the museum downstairs, it is very much worth it, as it is usually quite expensive to get into on its own.

Just returned from the Great Electric Train Show at Gaydon, this exhibition was heaving with visitors on both days and an interesting model railway exhibition set in a unique venue - The British Motor Museum. I think Mostyn was the only P4 layout in attendance and we won the Best Layout in Show trophy voted for by the public.

A very enjoyable weekend.

Very well done indeed. To stand out at a large show and to be voted as such by a mass of visitors really does speak to the critics who say that P4 provides no entertainment value, because it's all one-engine-in-steam on a bookshelf...

Thanks for sharing the news.

The green 47 at 8 mins 30 has just the right amount of Doppler effect and fade with the sound. It's much better than the other sound locos in the video to my ear.

Harsh how? The effect of the 47 is definately better than the others. Perhaps there's a setting difference (aside from the different sound files for different classes, obviously) but whatever it is is very noticeable. Just listen for yourself, it's very obvious

As someone outside of this loop I really can't tell what either of you mean. It's all just noise to me, no matter what the layout, no matter what the scale, no matter what the gauge and no matter what the era. Much better turned off, in my personal opinion.

If you don't like the look of a layout you can walk on by, but noisy layouts are much more difficult to escape.

Now if you could make it smell right, that would be much more evocative.

All the Best

DCC sound is one of those subjective things really in a lot of ways. I have been near layouts where the sound volume has been cranked right up and it is all you can hear. Mostyn from what I noticed kep the volume more subtle I felt. The videos might be being a bit unkind as well.

As for smell, there are several ways I could see that done potentially, e-cig vaporisers perhaps (without the nicotine of course). The trouble there is you have risks of setting off observers allergies (some could be severe), sound at least can be walked away from to avoid.

Funny you say that, I've been looking for a petrichor (wet grass) scent for a while for Brettell Road. Nothing I've tried so far is right.

Unless it's right next to what you feel to be the best layout in the show, in which case . From which you may rightly conclude I agree with Danny.

Or if you are exhibiting and your allocated spot is next to the offender. But this is as nothing compared operating a layout when neighbour to the live steam exhibit, in which case you will have to contend with atomised cylinder oil that droppeth on your tracks like the gentle dew...
