Scalefour Southwest at Railwells 2014

Postby John McAleely » Fri Jun 20, 2014 11:31 am

I've been recently furnished with the final planned listings for Scalefour Southwest, and at Chris' request they are now published here.

Scalefour Southwest 2014

It looks like the show has expanded compared to recent years, and there are 16 layouts, including two which appear to be of the same prototype - I wonder if they will be shown together?

I understand further details will be in a future Scalefour News.

It certainly does. Either Chris has access to more space or he will be squeezing things in even more than usual. :D Whatever the answer is I am sure it will be as good as always.

There is more space available following extensive work by the Council converting the old court room into a large usable hall. The trapdoor under the old gallows is still there though!

The show guide (PDF) is now available. The show page lists the latest updates to demos, etc.

There's still a fully operational set in Devonport Dockyard, it was tested every month when I was in there as a few crimes still attract the rope, one is arson in a Royal Dockyard.

I remember being threatened with that when first visiting the Dockyard in 1976 - in fact the offence disappeared in 1971 with the Criminal Damages Act, so it was outdated advice even then.

Where is the free parking for the show? (Yes, I know there will be signs, but I'd like some idea of where to go in case I miss a sign.)

'X' marks the car park. You have to approach along Silver St. * marks Railwells. Takes 3 or 4 minutes to walk between the two.

I should have added that the 'car park' is a field.

Not for us hopefully, if it is hot. We're right by the main entrance thank goodness! :)

Looking forward to it. Must remember to take:
1: the right layout
2: a fan I bought at the really hot Wells show back in about 2007. It was 32deg inside the Parkes Room (which is where I'll be this time)
3: shorts. Not pretty but very necessary.
Hope to see some of you there.

Why not Cheddar - that'll fool the S4 SW guide!

Latest forecast for Wells is warm and wet on Saturday, cool and very wet on Sunday. Wellies and waterproofs may be the order of the day, especially if using the free car park.

Thanks for the weather forcast, I will be playing trains on Merryfield if anyone wants a chat, if I'm not keeping hydrated at a suitable licensed premise.

Cheers Phil.

...and I will be doing my best to balance trays of hot and cold liquids around the various rooms and halls on Sunday. If I'm doing it right, you wont need to partake of certain other liquids elsewhere!

As of 2100 Friday, most of the layouts and traders' stands are in place. The extra hall is going to make a lot of difference. Burntisland looks spectacular as a large central display and well worth the long journey south. Looking around the other layouts and stands as they all fall into place, this is going to be the best Railwells of all time.

Well done Chris Challis!

Oh no! I don't want to get sucked back into Facebook in order to follow the Society's doings. :(

I've seen good honest people being turned into grey-faced addicted wrecks through Facebook. It is the work of the Devil, an enormous maze full of indecipherable words, unnecessary information, one way doors and corridors from which escape is almost impossible. I'm 67 and there's not enough time left to me to escape from it a second time!

O.K. I'm a Luddite (or so my children tell me) but please can the forum come first and anything else be seen as ancillary? I really do want to see your pictures, Danny!

I'm with Ian on this. I acknowledge the use of social media for publicity purposes, as a possible[?] way of reaching non-members, but for members our own media should surely take precedence?

Ditto on Facebook, I don't want to go there to find stuff.

It shouldn't impossible to load stuff from the Society's website onto Facebook, may even be possible to automate it (*), but making Facebook the primary source is a very bad move in my view.

(* I've not looked into doing it onto Facebook, but I've written automatic Twitter stuff, so items posted on the 2mm website get tweeted; but note which way round things happen - Items get Posted onto the 2mm Site, once on the 2mm site they are then sent by the software to Twitter....)
