Press Release
Cornish Club to change its name
The Falmouth & District Model Railway Club is the oldest club of its kind in the South West, founded in Falmouth in 1951. In the last few years scarcity of suitable premises compelled the Club to move away from Falmouth into a spacious, well equipped clubroom near Helston. Here we have four layouts currently under construction: ‘Trenance’, a 00 gauge GWR branchline terminus which was built to demonstrate a ‘keen beginner’s project’ that could be accommodated in most homes; ‘Gweek North Quay’ a 7mm scale narrow gauge layout representing part of the mythical Helford Valley Railway; an as yet, unnamed, 00 scale layout representing a medium sized city terminus in the 1950s; and ‘Watermouth’ a large and historic P4 layout which is currently undergoing restoration and further development.
Following the successful relocation further west we are pleased to announce the decision to rename the Club ‘The Helston & Falmouth Model Railway Club’. We feel that this maintains the historic links that the Club has with its roots in Falmouth, whilst reflecting the wider area that our membership is now drawn from. Since moving to the Helston area, our membership has grown steadily with modellers attending from Falmouth, Helston and further afield.
Railway modelling is an absorbing pastime that encompasses a wide range of skills and interests; historical research, wood and metal working skills, constructing kits, making miniature landscapes and buildings, wiring and electronics, photography and running trains. Additionally there is the social aspect of attending exhibitions, visits to preserved railways and club activities. In 2012 we held a highly successful exhibition presenting a range of quality model layouts with full support from the Trade.
In our second Spring show, to be held at the Old Cattle Market Community Hall, Helston on April 26 & 27, we intend to again present a good selection of high quality modelling which demonstrates the diversity of our hobby and the enduring fascination of miniature trains.
