Printed wheels

Postby grovenor-2685 » Tue Mar 10, 2020 10:31 pm

I note that the 2mm society are producing a new style of wheel.
It is worth mentioning that the 2mm Scale Association are now using 3D printing for locomotive wheels. They are printed in stainless steel by a firm in (I think) the Netherlands.

Is this something our stores or our entrepreneurial members could talk to them about?

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

You're welcome to talk to me; I did the CAD and orders from the manufacturer, and understand the end finishing. Manufacturer is in Belgium: materialise.com , who work in a similar way to Shapeways.

Before everyone gets excited, they'd be expensive in 4mm scale. Example of a 4ft6 driver, 18mm diameter, so roughly 17mm diameter print. A 4mm wheel is, say, 2mm thick. Might get four, maybe five, to a print with a maximum print area of 43mm*43mm. Knowing the price of the 2mm prints (1.3mm thick), making a rough allowance for the thicker 4mm print, then my finger in the air figure is £50 for the print (four or five centres). They then need machining for rims and axle bores. Don't be surprised at £30-£45 per pair of wheels.

It costs in for 2mm scale because we can get 9, 16 and sometimes 25 centres per print. So the per-wheel cost is much lower.

You might jest, but I got into this printed (sintered) metal stuff from talking to a fellow modeller who was printing 2mm scale narrow gauge loco chassis with functioning compensating beams in the print...

If you are talking 4mm then Gibson and Comet (This is a 4mm chat group), if you are talking 2mm then talk to one of the suppliers of etched components to etch a set.

If you get off your backside and talk to various traders with an idea I find them quite amenable.
Having a scale drawing of the prototype valve gear you are after helps the conversation along - research.

Makes Ultrascale look cheap.

I agree. About 20 years ago my son wanted some models of MoD diesel shunters. He had pictures and following a discussion with Mike Edge, and an agreement to put in a fairly modest amount of money to help with the development costs, the kits were developed into part of the range sold by Judith Edge Kits and Simon got what he wanted.
