London Road Models LNER J5 (GNR J22)

Postby Jol Wilkinson » Mon Sep 18, 2017 1:20 pm

London Road Models latest etched kit is for the LNER J5 (GNR J22).

The GNR built twenty of these Ivatt designed medium-powered goods locomotives in 1909-10, to meet the increasing goods and coal traffic being experienced by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) at that time. They had the same dimensions as the existing mixed traffic GNR Class J21 (LNER J1) locomotives, except they had smaller 5ft 2in coupled wheels. Two batches of ten J5s were built at Doncaster in 1909-10 and 1910.

Initially used on coal trains to London, they were later allocated to the Nottingham area, working trains in the area around the Derby and Nottingham coalfields. Occasionally used on summer passenger trains (when steam heating was not required), they were variously withdraw between 1953 and 1955.

The kit, priced at £118.00 including tender, fittings, etc. but requiring wheels, motor and gears to complete will be available from LRM at Scaleforum and through the LRM website hosted by the Scalefour Society (although John Redrup hasn't yet had time to get it added to the LNER locomotives section).
