The prices look very favourable compared to shapeways.

How does the acrylic compared to the shapeways fud?

Do you have plans for anymore southern or forebare companies?

Shapeways FUD/FXD is an acrylic based resin. My resin I don't currently know what it is composed of but it works!

It terms of printing qualities the Photon resin prints I will argue they turn out better simply because there is non of the wax residue of FUD needing to be smoothed over and the surfaces are generally smooth and crisp. Prints underneath are a tad rougher where the supports have been removed but other than that it's just the odd few lines that most 3D prints have that need smoothing over, mainly on large flat sides than anywhere else. Most of a model can be blasted with primer and painted on either straight away or after some extra smoothing.

Here is a 4 wheel Furness tender recently printed, no smoothing attempts have been made thus far, it's just been cleaned with the alcohol and water and dried out. The details will be more obvious once primed but the rivets all turn out perfectly. You can see a diagonal line on the flat side that needs smoothing, Front has some chips where the supports were removed but I've since thickened that up a tad so it won't happen. Other than that good to go.

Insert hasn't been glued in yet, just plonked for the picture. Am printing the extra bits for it as I type including spare leaf springs should they be removed for lining.

Thanks, ;) and after a quick blast of primer without any smoothing...

Again, honest as a nut, there are some lines that need smoothing as the panel shows one diagonally and the fine layer lines at the front will need a rub, other than that I think it's ready for the real paint. As of yet it's literally been cleaned, dried and sprayed. :)

Not injection moulded quality but I think we are pushing ever closer.

Would you say it is about resin/white metal quality rather than rtr quality (though rtr quality can be very variable! ).

Well, it's resin so I'd say its resin quality. :D

Apart from it being lighter I'd rather resin over white metal any day, that is my personal bias though, everyone has a preference.

White metal can have a slight grainy look to it and thin details are harder to achieve the definition in some areas such as fine rivets. Either medium can make a good model though.

Until we can 3D print a perfect injection moulded RTR item fully painted we will have to do some modelling either way. :thumb

Smoothing example for that line. Bit of chiseling or gentle knifing, humbrol model filler, fiber glass brush, filler primer blast and more fiber glass brush.

The Photon printed items look very good.

One of the issues I have with Shapeways is that the Digital Representations shown for many items give no indication as to the likely surface finish. Given their prices I am not willing to take the risk purchasing a model as a friend has done, only to get something which, even after a lot of filling painting, etc. isn't really acceptable.

Yes, and it's surprisingly difficult to take photos of small parts that properly represent the finish. I've taken taken photos of my products for the shop. Some look worse than the physical thing seen with my own eyes; some look better. Lighting is critical for showing up surface finish. And it would help if I had a better camera than an iPhone, but I don't really have the cash to invest.

I've had samples from other printing outlets that look horrendously patterned in the bare resin, but the pattern disappears completely under a thin coat of (non-filler) primer.

Very hard to give a correct impression.

Also, Gavin's blemish-removal technique is very, very good. Any chance of getting this demonstrated at a show sometime? I must switch from Squadron green putty to Humbrol for this kind of thing, as I've recently made a right mess of filling and smoothing some wagon prints. Which brand of primer is it?

Thanks Jol.

I hear you on the Shapeways thing. I'm asuming you are refering to their acrylic based resin (FUD/FXD/SFDP)
as the WSF is rougher and requires a lot of smoothing to get a good finish.

The FUD requires less smoothing and is crisper but does have a bit of grain pattern on in areas, mainly where the support wax was. Still takes a fair bit of smoothing yet will give a better model than WSF. The FXD though is significantly better as it is a higher resolution so you can get down to painting quicker. I understand you feeling put off.

Also FUD and FXD prices at the moment though...sheeeysh. what a P#%^ take.
Is partly why I want to do things here directly.

Glad you like the smoothing. :)

I'm using a Samsung 'phone for pictures currently. Same reason as you are using an iphone!

Even though in responce to Jol you mentioned a non-filler primer this is what I have been using.

Specifically Halfords plastic filler primer. Cap is the same butterscotch type colour. I find it works well wetted as it turns into a fine cream thus easier to fill any bits needed. If using a fiber glass brush wetting the primed surface first helps. Be sure to gently rub residue with a tissue before going over it....those splinters. :-/

Good thing about the Photon prints is the rivets are a lot stronger than FUD ones. You can give it a significant amount of pressure with a fiberglass brush if you need to yet with FUD you need to be more delicate.

For a standard primer I find Tamiya fine primer is good as a top coat.

I've never tried Squadron Green and always used Humbrol Model Filler for wee areas and Milliput for much bigger things.

If you mean me demonstrate at a show I doubt it as I'm disadvantaged in this area. Would be nice to exhibit one day or maybe have a stall or something but I can perpetually never attend Saturday events and I doubt managers want a space filling for only Sunday or whatever I see no way around this so I have just come to accept it.

I've also just made a mess of filling/sanding a kit side with Green Stuff, but mine was injection plastic, not a 3D print (OK, it was Dapol's DP1 Deltic Prototype, where I had removed the raised beading rather clumsily and had to make amends - but please don't tell anyone). The point is, I knew the Green Stuff tube was towards the end of its life, and I should have done the sensible thing and thrown it away earlier. Proving (to my mind anyway) that filler has a definite 'shelf life' but only from the moment you've opened it, I rescued the situation with a 'brand new' tube of Humbrol filler that was probably bought 10 years ago. But that was only used because it was all I had at the time; IMHO Humbrol (fresh) shrinks a lot more than Green Stuff (fresh) and doesn't sand as easily, so it's not my preferred resource. Revel Plasto suits me best - smoother than Humbrol, sands a bit easier, sets a bit quicker - but Squadron White Stuff (finer than the Green one, despite the views of several 'colour war' antagonists) is also very good before it gets too old.
But what worries me about all of these is that they are spirit-based, which helps grip on plastic but could potentially be detrimental to the various 3D print substances. Having had a 3D buffer disintegrate under a (very mild) coat of enamel paint, I have subsequently stuck religiously to instructions that I should only use acrylic colours (which I hate!) for such things, but until someone tells me definitively if that has to be purely water-based acrylic, or can include spirit-based like Tamiya, I remain extremely nervous of inadvertently destroying another 3D-printed masterpiece through use of substances I've always regarded, for plastic modelling purposes, as harmless. That includes, FWIW, my preferred filler/primer, which is Alclad either in white or grey. I did casually shoot a coat of the grey at a couple of Bill Bedford's wagons two or three years ago, without any obvious ill results. but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try it again, and sadly I can't get Halford's primer here (the French 'equivalents' aren't!).

Must admit I'm interested in trying these other fillers out. Been using the two I mention forever and haven't branched out to try new stuff as they seem to work well.

As to paints and 3D printing, on a personal experience enamels have thus far posed no problems at all.

The fact that the Photon resin is cleaned with 99.9% pure alcohol should give some confidance to the less potent thinners in paint.

FUD/FXD I usually clean with white spirit.

I am finding recent posts very relevant to my current project which is to assemble the two Midland Railway D299 3d printed wagon kits that I purchased from Bill Bedford at Scaleforum last September. The first one is assembled and is now being painted. Starting, as usual, from a position of pure ignorance, I gave the body a good wash in isopropanol, with no ill effects on the plastic, though I am not sure how much good it did either. I then used a mixture of Humbrol enamels to paint the inside in a not very successful attempt to represent weathered timber, again with no ill effects on the plastic. As an aside can anyone tell me whether the interior ironwork was painted black or simply left to rust? Yesterday I painted the exterior, again with Humbrol enamel and again with no ill effects. I used a brush because the temperature here in Melbourne was 42 C and I don't think airbrushing in my garage would have been good for the airbrush or the wagon. The Humbrol paint came from my collection of ancient pots and despite thorough stirring for half an hour still came up very glossy, but this will be an advantage (I hope) when I come to affix the transfers. It has, however emphasized the diagonal lines which are, I think, an artefact of the three dimensional printing process. To the naked eye they are not nearly so obvious, but still visible. I have not yet thought of a way of removing them without risking damage to the bodywork and the grooves between the planking. Unless anyone has a suggestion, I will hope that they become less obvious after weathering and a spray with Testors Dullcote post transfer application.

The second kit was packed with 10' brake gear so work on it has come to a halt until Bill sends me a replacement 9' print, so I have time to experiment on reducing the visibility of the diagonal lines on the unpainted body even if I cannot resolve the problem in the first one.

The grey resin I use has a naturally matt finish which all but hides the very fine striations on the surface, so my advise would be not to use gloss paint, and probably not to use enamels.

As for using IPA for cleaning, all the parts are soaking in IPA fore about 20 minutes so a quick clean won't affect the resin, though I wouldn't leave fine parts in IPA for a long time as the will soften and swell.

Your Designs Printed

Now I've had considerable practice 3D printing my own designs and doing a few from others I'm at a position where I can now consider printing other people's designs more often.
Worse case scenario would be a refund if after a few tries it isn't happening - had to do that once anyway.

If you're interested, I'll look at the STL file and give a yay or nay or maybe if you tweak it.  After that it'd be a quote and if happy printing.

Just throwing the option out there.  :)

Please send an email to sparkshot082@gmail.com if you're interested.  It'll be cheaper than Shapeways if we go ahead with anything.

Like buttons. Eeeugh, glad we don't have 'em.

Officially 115 x 65 x 155 mm for the Anycubic Photon. Not massive yet most things are printed at a bit of an angle anyway to reduce suction.

Not the best picture as white is the very devil to get a good shot of but it's a LSWR Coach Side printed at 50 microns as a test for someone.

Based on this at least I'd think the whole thing would turn out nice.
