Ah no worries no worries. I appreciate any input people give.

I agree that it makes little sense to change the wheelbase in the rebuild which is why it concirns me.

Now I find your suggestion of 7' 10" interesting because the Rush drawing when scaled to the smaller wheel sizes had a wheelbase a tweak bigger than 7' 9" but the rail height to buffer centre was too low, then I scaled it to the bigger wheel sizes and it matched.

Again though I have concluded the J1 kit can easily be made to accomodate both wheel sizes if you choose to use a pony option (If I go that route - thinking of making it optional) as the height can easily be adjusted by making it slack or adding washers. The ride height would only be about 0.7mm difference but this again could easily be sorted if you seat the bushes a wee higher or lower.

I want to get it so that everything can if possible (if historical!) match with the E1 then converting the kit will be easier on mesh for later on.

Either way though I need to set a wheelbase and stick to it but am really struggling to know what to trust.

Jol on RMweb sent a helpful article and PDF download basically showing the published wheelsizes aren't always trust worthy as apparently some historical records only shown the 'nominal' diameter dependin on tyre thickness throughout a locomotives life.

Pah!

What a lark.

Ok, if you or anyone does come up with a definitive wheelbase that is not able to be debunked great but if not I'll just have to make a decision and hope it is the best and correct one.

The photo edits I did at the start of the J1 section seem to show 8' 0" but 7' 9" if using the smaller wheels. The drawings also scale both ways but the 14mm rail height to buffer centre gauge makes me think only the 8' 0" reading is correct.....but I haven't seen 8' 0" quoted in a book I only get it from Drawing A and the photograph edits. Fudge. Such a pain. Think I will try editing E1 photographs with the rulers and see what happens.

Bummer alert: The M1 photograph you will have to edit on SiF now!

The LNWR was prone to doing this - their 0-8-0/2-8-0 classes had nominal 4' 3" wheels, otherwise quoted as 4' 5.5" [presumably "as new"], a difference of just over 0.8mm in 4mm scale.

I understood that the wheel diameter quoted by the LNWR was for the centre casting, without any tyre. It's not the diameter of the tyred wheel when the tyre is halfway worn.

The excellent resources on the LNWR Society Webbsite (no, I'm not on any commission, though I may suggest at the next AGM that we run some sort of competition) explain that tyres initially added 41/2" to wheel size, later 3". On the other hand, the <4'3"> Class E 2-8-0 is shown in the revitalised loco sections as having wheels of 4'51/2". I assume this was indeed with tyres partly worn ...

Hello again. I've left it a few days to think what to do and say. I haven't ignored the last few posts at all.

I have written a small thought process that may or may not be true thus the inclusion of the word 'perceived.'

Option A -
If I set the fixed chassis points and ride height to the bigger wheels then adding the smaller ones is no big issue. It just means the ride height will be lower than 14mm's rail height to buffer centre. Leading wheels can be adjusted even easier by washers etc.

Perceived Pro's - Correct to Mike Peascod information and Drawing A. If this is all true then it would represent the engine as built with fresh wheels.
Perceived Con's - If you want to add smaller wheels then it will reduce the ride height by 0.75 or whatever - not measured yet. Also if you believe the published info on smaller wheels then having the model default at the bigger ones will be a wee bummer.

Option B -
If I set the fixed chassis points and ride height to the smaller wheels then adding the bigger ones is no big issue. It just means the ride height will be higher than 14mm's rail height to buffer centre. Leading wheels can be adjusted even easier by washers etc.

Perceived Pro's - Correct to the majority published information and may be seen as more correct in most people's eyes. If the smaller wheels are indeed the 'Nominal' wheel sizes after some mileage then the smaller wheels may be more in line with what would be the more common image in reality and may not be actually incorrect if the above is the truth. Having a running height a bit higher than the rail height to buffer centre seems to me better than having it lower as quite a few RTR models have a height of 15mm's etc.
Perceived Con's - Not correct to Mike Peascod information and Drawing A if they are indeed more true.

Either way I want to make it the same as the E1 if that indeed is the historical truth as it seems more logical and if I make an E1 at some point I can then easily use what I have.

Wheelbase is currently set to 8' 0" like on Drawing A but as far as I have seen published info says 7' 9" and 8' 6". The latter I am discounting for various reasons but the smaller two I'm still bouncing between.

If you have other thoughts on this please advise. You have kindly gave your views and for this I give my thanks. :thumb I have thought on them and the issue much so I'm about to make a decision as I can't do much more to the creation unless I stick to an idea and go with it but would like to squeeze more info or a possibility of a true outcome first if at all possible.

I just had a really nice couple of days with Davey and Tom. We went to Reading MRC where Tom kindly took a few pics and we had a little play about. Here is a new pic of my WSF prototype L&YR Class 28.

Thanks Mike. :)

It was Tom who badgered me to drive us to the club and insisted I went via his house so he could get his Fuji camera. He caught some really nice shots. :)

They look different taken with suitable backgrounds, gives a whole new impression.

I just need to get some nice FUD examples painted up, then I can take comparison pics. Got a FUD K2 in the building stage so looking forward to finishing it. I think I need to pull my finger out and give them running numbers too though.

This probably won't interest anyone but thought I'd show it as a new development. A guy made a big deal to me that he wanted one of the E2 bodies in STEEL of all things.

I made it clear that some details would have to be removed, some areas significantly thickened up requiring a bit of a filing after and that the price would be silly. He still wanted it.
So after literally over 30 attempts re-meshing and re-uploading...

OK. :thumb

Indeed, I'm surprised such an adamant request was made. The material choice section even describes the surface texture.

He has ordered it in the polished grey steel. I've requested pics but whether I'll see them or not only time will tell.

I did print out an Aleph pendant in the cheapest Steel and that turned out fine but the surface was a little pitted and dimply az you would expect. You could sort it with the usual priming and sanding.

I snagged that pendant on the door at work at the top of a warehouse driving a VNA truck when trying to reach over to the racking and never saw it again. Couldn't find it for toffee. :/

Will get another done at some point but in a different material or finish.

With this E2 print out ideally a bit of priming work and filing down of thicknesses in areas will be needed.
Hopefully he will show the pics.

Edit, for interest, this is what was ordered, what Shapeways say and the model version trying to get it to pass the green ticks.

This model is 3D Printed in Polished Grey Steel: Treated and polished for a dark grey sheen, with visible print lines.

Not finished yet but I thought I'd give you all an update for those it may interest. Lots of progress has been made but slowed down from what it could by various other things in life. (Always the way isn't it? :? )

The J1 and E1 are coming along nicely, the J1 about 80% estimate and the E1 not so much. As the J1 was a rebuild of the E1 I thought it wise to crack on with the J1 until the optimum moment of advancement to jam the safety valves and blow a copy of the J1 to smithereens and only rebuild what is different - so that is what I have been doing.

Not much to show yet on the E1. You can see the different chimney's though.
Image

With these J1 pics I coloured it roughly to give an impression. Since these pics more work has been done such as more riveting, a water filler cap and a lot of chassis progress.

Image

Still plenty to be done but it is at the stage where it looks very much like it is supposed to. So now you have sen this there probably isn't any point showing you any more updates until it is ready.....unless I need to pick some brains, in which case.
Hope you enjoyed it, comments, suggestions and critiques welcome. :)

Great news.

May I present the Furness Railway's J1 Class Locomotive, now ready for order!

The chassis are nearly completed but some details need to be finalised before upload.

Also a very important note that must be understood: My computer has been having a real bubble trying to edit and process things due to the file growing insurmountably mainly due to the myriad of rivets. Not only have I been battling through countless hang ups and ridiculous slow down but when trying to integrate the backhead cab controls it glitched terribly and converts everything into a wire frame that I cannot do anything with. I was not able to work around this and so the backhead and some details sadly will have to go in an upload for purchasing separately, for this I can only appologise. However, as usual you'll be notified with any updates.

The J1 ran with several different chimney variants. The body kit comes with the small type, however the others will be available soon also. Rather than give all the bases, instead the base is moulded into the smokebox and the various chimney shanks drop in place allowing interchangeable looks and periods. The other advantage is the lowest lip doesn't have to be quite as fat like on a lot of model engines.

I haven't decided yet whether the chimneys should all be in one order or individual...or both options may be better. I'm open to suggestions.

I know many like to buy just the loco bodies and then either make their own chassis or meld/bash them on to RTR chassis so rather than waiting the body is ready now.

Anyway, although I still have work to do to get the other bits completed this essential is now ready. :)

Here are a few pics with a mostly completed chassis, some pics are partially coloured in, should help to give an impression of the finished machine.

Okies.

As before I'll be finishing off the E1 first then moving on to something else. Been pidelling with a 2D CAD program and the next hurdle is etching as I want to be able to provide the range with the option of etched chassis, rods and details too. Some have voiced to me they very much appreciate the 3D printed fixed ones but obviously we all have different needs and wants.

I've sinced moved on to a 10 hour night shift so I'm finding myself buggered a lot! Less time to do stuff but the wage is for a change good to me so if I do buy a 3DP printer in theory it should come quicker. Researching the right choice is proving a hard decision too, also swirling around the smokebox is the idea to use a good master and cast things, a bit like Golden Age Models. Have done a bit of casting before but not a complex loco body. Options options options.

There are a few industrial 0-4-0's lined up but sourcing the drawings for them has so far proved impossible. Need to get down the NRM I think.

Any teasers as to the industrials Gavin? There may be more information available at the University of Glasgow for Barclay engines. I'd give you a link but I haven't figured out how to do that on a tablet yet.

Thanks for the collective feedback. I've took a while replying as my old 'phone I was viewing on wouldn't read the link, many thanks for it though as I can view it now.

I record suggestions of things to make but can't say what I'll launch with for industrials as I haven't decided yet, still finalising the J1 and will be building it soon once my orders to Shapeways, Alan Gibson et al have been fulfilled, this will give me any info needed should any of the chassis' need tweaking although I'm pretty sure things will be bob on. Also on the 3D side of things the E1/Albion jobby needs finishing. As I started it part way through from the J1 it is I guess half complete minus tender.

As I'm also learning a certain 2D CAD program to ventur into the very much needed by some etching, it seems a good idea to start with a small 0-4-0.
3D Printed coupling rods have been working well for me so far but I don't fancy trying crossheads and slide bars - don't think the technology is quite there yet for the consistency needed of such small but high precision components in metal.
