How to rectify a short indicated by Gaugemaster Combi when switching from neutral to F or R positions, please

You need to provide more information on the problem if you want a definitive answer. But if;
A) The unit trips when not connected to a layout, the fault will be located internal to the unit.
B) The unit trips only when connected to a layout, check the layout for the cause of the trip. It could be anything from turnout switches not thrown properly, to a piece of metal shorting to rails.
A multimeter is a must in this hobby.

Does this occur when the unit is disconnected from the layout?
If so, I strongly recommend that you contact Gaugemaster directly.
They have a lifetime guarantee, see http://www.gaugemaster.com/gaugemaster.html
That is as long as you do not tinker with the unit
