In the past I have always used birch faced 6mm topped with 3mm cork tiles, recently on two v.large boards I reduced* the size to 3mm with disastrous results as I had to install so much bracing that the weight saving was negated.
The next layout will be a micro 1,2mx.75m 'puppet theatre' to replace the quarry layout with something less cumbersome, but what materials are recommended? 6mm top with similar material for the structure?
*I need to be careful of weight.

Re: Basebaord material
For a layout of that size you might like to look at use of foam material, see Balcombe

Re: Basebaord material
Edward Sissling built a 2mm layout using thin foamboard; its a one-piece baseboard not dissimilar in size to the one proposed.
