Scenic modules

Postby nberrington » Wed Nov 14, 2018 1:44 am

The full set of boards for the scenic area is now complete. Place in situ in the library. I think they look spiffy.....

Looking good Neil! :thumb :thumb . Now comes the track and scenery - Enjoy!

I'm in transition mode after a house move. I now have a dedicated layout room that will blend the old home layout with half of my portable. The other half to become a new, smaller portable. Pics eventually ;)

Cheers,

David

Lovely baseboard and cupboard units, Neil - Swanage?

I am starting serious planning of my own groundworks; please can I ask what is your trackbed height and depth of the baseboards proper, and the depth from the wall?

Many thanks,

Steve

Having a Turkish rug in the railway room seems like a good antidote for the carpet god's antics.
Hopefully, such a magic carpet will return dropped items to the work surface automatically.

Hi Steve

Yep - it’s Swanage with a little artistic licence- to keep it close to scale I pruned 2 of the carriage sidings. The models are 2’ x 4’8.5”. The track bed is 6” high and the basic baseboard 4” - the idea being the train is integral to the surroundings notnplonked on top.

Unfortunately the bookshelves encroach a bit, but the layout is intended to be modular - so this is its “home at home”

More to follow...

Have to say I rather like the bookshelves ... my minds eye has already got them containing the backscene using the shelves themselves for lighting ... funny how ones mind fills in the gaps with no respect for the actual proposals ;)

Hello Neil,

They look great! Lovely and light too.

They sit nicely. Will you have to store them away upright or are you hoping to have them out in the library most of the time? I like libraries. Maybe later modellers will have small text screens, no books and more room for layouts! Or virtual layouts : (

Do the seperate panels flex at all when off their support? I'm curious to know if you use the existing support (cupboards) to help with the levelling or does the layout become level in construction and sit on the benches at whatever points meet?

It looks like a quick and simple set-up.

Thanks for the photos.

Hi Andrew

The layout will mostly stay in situ. I am currently constructing the traverser/ turntable which can slot in either in place of the first module, or at the very end if at a show.

The modules lie directly on the cupboards, and lock together quite tightly with DCC concepts dowels. I did cnc guided holes for 4mm bolts, but they don’t seem needed when the layout is on the cupboards. If moved to a trestle support system I would bolt them together.

The dowel positions where cut on a shopbot- so they align precisely.

The whole idea is suffering from “concept creep” - becoming ever more complicated. The guys at the worker space I use have been teasing me as construction of the traverser becomes ever more intricate.

Thanks Neil,

I just noticed the felt pads under the baseboards proper, excellent idea for sound-deadening as well as non-scratch properties.....

I forgot to ask also - what is the floor-to-top of baseboard height, please?

Cheers, will be following keenly....

Hi Steve - the cupboard are 3ft, so track bed height is 42” for the mainline. The mpd and goods sidings are ever so slightly lower.

And finally a use for Edward Gibbon:

Looking good Neil,

and you know I approve of your use of foam!

Excellent workmanship and instructive to see how the foam is being used. But Gibbon is worth more than that - the sidenotes alone make for an entertaining evening (although giggling over them in the school library is not necessarily the best way to impress your History master ...).

Hi Neil,

What are you planning to use for sculpting the foam? Knives and saws tend to be a bit messy but hot wire gives off some nasty gasses IIRC.

Cheers,

David

Very nice , I like the idea of storage over the layout but I’m always freaked that I’ll drop something onto the layout

The spot below the books is all I really have. We downsized for a typical humangous Noth American home in suburbia into a trendy hipster loft. Although I love the place, space is somewhat limited when it comes to layouts!

Am just loving watching this grow like magic. Fascinated to see what you do with the foam next ;) Interested that you chose to form the road bridge directly from the foam rather than build off seen and drop in - or perhaps it will be removed for detailing?

I really like the fact that the layout forms part of the furniture ... should look great when complete - have you had any thoughts about layout lighting at all yet? ..... and if so would this just be for exhibition or also as part of its home location. :thumb

Hi Tim - the foam bridge is a temporary structure while I manhandle the foam. I wanted the contours to be consistent each side of the bridge. I need to tweak this a bit after studying some photographs..

Did a little gap filling today. Expandable foam from a can. Caution - do not be tempted to smear smooth - it becomes hard to remove excess. A light spray of water and let it set up, then trim back with a sharp no 21 blade. Sand smooth.
