Hornby/Hattons and Roxey 4W - chassis/wheels?

Postby William A » Sun Apr 24, 2022 9:00 am

Hi all,

I'm considering my next project and it fits broadly into an LCDR/SER theme - and such a variety of the odd dog-boxes those companies called passenger carriages. I think it would be really nice to get a rake of coaches.

The Hattons/Hornby RTR coaches are obviously not at all suitable for LCDR but may with suitable repainting provide a good impression of SER. Are they fine just being re-wheeled or do they really need compensation? I understand that for wagons compensation is generally recommended for long wheelbase, and these are fairly long. Is it a case of using one of the simple rocking iron etches from the stores to sort it out? (if so, which?)

I'm also looking at Roxey LCDR coaches and so a similar question is raised - will I need to sort myself out or are they fine uncompensated?

I'm lastly looking at some bogie coaches in the future and wanted to confirm the neccesity of CCU's - again I'm assuming yes, but better to check than be caught out :)

Thank you!
William
