Gresley Open Brake Third

I'm about to start on a build of a Gresley Open Brake Third using a Cooper Craft (ex Ian Kirk?) kit although, as I model the 70s/80s, I'll be converting it in to it's departmental use as part of the British Rail Weedkiller train as in the photo below:

I'd like to spring the bogies (Gresley 8'6") and wonder what the options are. I know Rumney Models do a kit but are there any other alternatives?

Well, the end profile is wrong, the roof ends are the wrong shape, the upper panelling is too deep and the sides are too thick but Chris Pendlenton made a very nice job of 2 of them.

I just happen to have a brand new version of the sprung bogie ready to go.

Thanks Dave,

A good look at the kit today has revealed it's limitations but I'm not aware of an alternative...

As for the bogies, what's the best way to order from you as I suspect it'll be quite some time before I can catch you at a show.

That was a bit quicker than I expected - typed before I thought but it shouldn't take me long to get some straight piano wire for the secondary springs to save you straightening the thick coiled stuff I have.

You can make a huge difference to these coaches by filling in the top panels with pieces of Plastikard (it might be .010" but check) and re-profiling the roof ends by sticking on strips and filing back to a template - I've done it with a Hornby. I'll try and attach a drg of the proper shape - Isinglas is wrong here. I'm assuming you're modelling an LNER vehicle and not a pre-group with taller roof ellipse.

I doubt anyone will be concerned that it displays rather than is attached, You are distributing a copy either way, and the LNER are long gone.
But if you really want to attach a .jpg file without it displaying then hide it in a .zip.

Thanks to all who replied and to Mike Trice who emailed me. I've decided that I'm going to build this kit as it stands for practice. Shockingly, I've never built a coach before although, in fairness, I'm modelling a freight only line.

As and when lockdowns end and finances are more plentiful, I'll put together all the parts to do this properly.

Do you need other photos of this carriage? I have a feeling a friend designed the weedkilling equipment and the adaptations for this coach from a revenue-earning vehicle. He certainly designed the Gresley suburban they used before this one. I've asked him to confirm it was his work, and if he has other photos.

Thanks again, I had got the photos from Pauls website.

As it happens, Mick has been a treasure trove of information and he sent me some fantastic photos of the interior of the coach last night :thumb

I think I'm going to do the existing kit as a 'layout coach' representation then, in time, do a full detail version...
