GWR Trumpet vents

Postby David B » Thu Aug 30, 2018 4:23 pm

On early GWR horse boxes, there was a trumpet vent on the roof of the groom's compartment - the D&S N6 kit has one. 2 questions:

1. Which way were they set - longitudinally or transverse? I have found few original photos (which are not very clear).

2. When did they go out of use, being replaced with shell vents?

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

David,

I cannot find a prototype photo of a horsebox with trumpet vents.

However I can offer the following information derived from models which always show the trumpet vents arranged longitudinally along the van.

N6 from Wizard models - photo on their website

N6 of my own from a Colin Waite kit (I think) bought made up - a photo of one of these is given on p.94 of part 3 of Great Western Branch Line
Modelling by Stephen Williams

N11 D&S kit built by me, the instructions for which clearly show the longitudinal arrangement

I hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Joe
