Siphon brandings

Postby steve howe » Mon Jul 16, 2018 8:33 pm

I'm just completing a couple of Siphon 'F's one of which is finished in the old pre-War 1 livery with 25" "G" & "W" on the louvres in the outer panels, and the number in 16" letters on the louvres in the two centre panels.

My problem is what other branding would there have been (i.e Tare etc. I have no idea what the Tare weight would be for a Siphon F) and where would it have been placed on the lower panels? Unfortunately the HMRS publication which would provide the final details is out of print and not in my collection, and all the photos in Russell are BR period. Siphon Fs were not that common and went through many alterations in their lifetime, so whatever I do its bound to be wrong!

Steve,

There is a photo of Siphon F number 1543 in the first built livery in the HMRS book. If you PM me your email, I'll send you a scan.

The book also states "capacity was 18 tons and average tare weight around 22 tons". The locations for these are clear on the photo.

Bryan
