Brake bows

Postby Guy Rixon » Tue Jan 24, 2017 6:03 pm

Does anybody know where I can buy etches for brake bows? I.e., the triangular arrangements of fittings by which the brake shoes are pulled against the wheel (not sure if "brake bows" is the correct term). I used to use a D&S product, which is gone now, and can't find anybody selling them today.

Dependent on the style of your prototype, and the shape of the material used in construction, then it’s feasible to make your own. Prototypes with round section would be easier than flat.
See my article in S4News 192, bottom of page 33 for an example made from wire and a simple jig.

Ambis do indeed sell brake "yokes", so I guess that's my supplier from now. Thanks.

Hello Guy

Just noticed your enquiry re brake bows and where to get them from. I bought several sets of these from Branchlines some time ago and as far as I know they are still available. They are etched in brass and there are 8 yokes per packet. I have not used these as yet but I noted that the bar which fits in the brake shoes is 20mm long - may be a bit tight for P4.

Hope this helps.

Regards

On bows which have been a touch short, I have soldered on a length of 0.3/0.35mm wire to extend them.
