I'm preparing a 4 wheeled W1 van for painting and as a MR man I just want to check I've got the right info. The van was built around 1890 and I'd like the livery to be correct for around 1906. Am I right in thinking it would have been all brown? Or would the upper panels have been cream and would there have been lining in/around any of the panels? Also would it have carried any crests at all?
Thanks.
Andy

It would depend on when the vehicle had visited the works. The 'brown' livery was fairly short lived before the lake livery came in in 1908. There was no programme of repainting; vehicles were repainted as and when they visited the works, so your vehicle would most probably have been in chocolate & cream in 1906 and remained so until sent for work to be done on it.

Thanks chaps/ I had found that site, but some smarty pants had told me that GWR NPCS was brown. I shall now proceed with confidence.

NPCS was brown, but Parcels Vans were not classed as NPCS.

But that one is in a more modern livery. Try Cyril Print's coaches for the earlier livery. But he is showing at least 2 different versions of the earlier livery.
