French wagon buffer

I watched a Jacques Tati film yesterday - Jour de Fête. There's a scene in a rural set of sidings with a wagon that appeared to have a single buffer set in the middle of the beam. Were my eyes playing tricks?
Make Worcestershire great again.
Build a wall along the Herefordshire border and make them pay for it.

Standard gauge I think.
Make Worcestershire great again.
