Bachman VBA wagons

Postby HighlandRailwayman » Mon Sep 23, 2013 7:23 am

Morning Gents,

I have a quick query that i am hoping someone more knowledgabel with BR air braked wagons then me can assist.

I have aquired some VBA wagons and some bill bedford springing units to convert them (the turnable bachmann units be worse then useless to just re-wheel) but what i can't find out is the correct sized wheels to fit. The bachmann ones are i think 10mm ish (my vernier is packed away awaiting the pending house move) but i have a feeling these are a tad on the small size and done to fit the turning units.

I would have thought 12mm wheels would have been correct, but i can't seem to find anything online or in my library to confirm this. I recall seeing an old weights diagram for one, but i am damned if i can find where i saw it!

I also assume that these would have disc brakes fitted - as from the photos i have seen, it looks like the calipers are on the inside end of the axles?

So, hopefully a simple one that someone can help me with.

Kind regards,

Martin

Hi Martin

If you are sticking with the original suspension type then you need 12mm disk braked wheels. Some vans did have smaller but the suspension was very different.

It's worth adding an approximation of some actual brakes too

This is an SPA but it gives you an idea.

There are several suppliers of 12mm wheels but I think those sold by Colin Craig are probably the best. Colin will be at Scaleforum.

Yes, I have some of Colins wheels already, and they are very nice.

Look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.
