What goes round comes round, eventually. The last ones I remember were converted from first generation DMUs 50 or so years ago.

They were based on Derby lightweight body shells, but were, I think, battery electric from the start, not conversions. They are preserved in Scotland on the line for which they were built in the mid-1950s - http://preserved.railcar.co.uk/RoyalDeeside.html

It was, I believe, highly regarded; but every time I went up to Aberdeen to have a run on it, it had broken down (or at least was out of service). I don't think reliability was very good.
