ex-SR Hampshire Unit (2H)

Postby Dave K » Wed Jul 23, 2008 3:04 pm

I am building a Southern Pride 2H and have been looking at the Hampshire & Sussex Units Preservation Society website. The photos of the non-driving end view of one their coaches http://www.hsups.org/60122_details_2.htm shows that the two coaches were joined using a buckeye coupling.

Has anyone any experience of using buckeyes to couple BR Mark 1’s or Southern Bullied coaches? I guess one would use KeeDee’s – but what sort and is it possible or practicable.

Hi Dave,

I have recently put Kaydees onto a rake of Bachmann Mk1s. Ted Scannell of the CLAG gave me some useful advice after I had looked at their webpage.

http://www.clag.org.uk/kaydees-mk1.html

For my installation I used #711 Kaydees although #714 will also do as the only difference is the length of the uncoupling dropper. The pictures below show the detail and key dimensions of the installation. I also found that some modification was needed to the bogie frame stretcher to clear the underside of the Kaydee draft box.

Cheers....Morgan

One thing to bear in mind, the KD 7xx series have a very small vertical range, if your track is not very flat they can easily come apart. The KD 5 is better from that point of view although a bit big.

Presumably using them between cars in the unit you don't want to shunt with them and they will be pretty much out of sight, my thought would be to use the bigger ones. If you really want scale appearance get a set of Sergent couplers from the P87 stores.http://www.proto87.com/model-railroad-couplers.html

This is an example of a KD 5 Image and Image

NB.
Now I have looked at the photo of the real thing, they have the buffing plates that are normally the foundation for the gangway. You will need to have those sprung if the ensemble is to work properly, else you have to leave an oversize gap.
