3rd rail pickup
3rd rail pickup
Has anyone got scale 3rd rail pickups (or 3rd & 4th rail) to work satisfactorily?

There's a gent on RMweb who goes by the name of 'oldlugger' who has built a layout called St. Mary Hoo in P4 and that has working 3rd rail.
Not that long ago he did a class 73 with working 3rd rail pickup. There relevant bit is towards the bottom of page 5.

Re: 3rd rail pickup
We have fitted third rail to Elcot Road, using the supports and rail from the stores, but it is purely cosmetic. Using the Bachmann 2EPB and MLVs, the pick up shoes just skim the top of the conductor rail, and because it was a tad high in places, we found it was necessary to scrape a bit off the bottom of the pick up shoe to prevent de-railments but otherwise everything was fine. Fitting working shoe beams with some sort of spring loading to cope with variations in the height of the conductor rail should be possible for those who enjoys such things.
