RT Models - Thomas Vanguard 0-4-0

Postby nberrington » Sat Apr 01, 2023 12:20 am

The frivolity continues as I wait for some bits to finish the DS74. These little critters are fun as “quickies”.

The kit is nicely designed- using the same gearbox/ compensation setup Mike Edge uses. The etches fit rather well (a few minor things, but mostly fairly straightforward. I like the exploded diagram instructions....

This will definitely fit on Dave Knight’s little layout.....it’s tiny....

Agreed Neil, it would be right at home on the layout, a picture of which I attach just to give context.

A Sunday afternoon well wasted….

It’s a tiny little loco.

Don’t have the right wheels yet - I don’t think Royal Mail has quite recovered….

Hope so! I’m embarrassed to show him with spoked wheels! Hopefully my Wizard order gets through on time.

Going to put some Dingham’s on, just for you....

Hard core bumble bee look now. The Fox transfers are excellent, but tricky - went though a good amount of stripes before I was happy.

Finishing touches are always slower than one thinks

Roof and interior to do - that will have to wait until after Toronto.
First trials - noisy and slow with sticky compensation - will need some tweaking at some point ….

Very nice, Neil. Your painting is far superior to my efforts.

Might the pick-ups be the problem with the sticky compensation? The two wires look a bit thick and stiff. I suggest putting a couple of turns in them to make them more springy. I did this with my Y6 tram loco. See the last two images on this post

That weathering is bringing it to life. Love the rust effects on the upper body.

Those pickups on the Y6 are nifty - I am going to give that a try!!

So I reassembled the little guy, lightened up on the pickups, turned the axles a tiny bit shorter, popped in a driver and glazing. Some roof weathering added.

She now runs across the turnouts without nose-diving into the crossing. It is one powerful beastie and pulls a string of wagons without any protest. (I really like these little coreless motors! Although all the lead sheet in the chassis and body really helps)
