It’s so ugly, it’s pretty…..

Yes, it has a certain je ne sais quoi to it. I look forward to seeing in person. Full lined passenger livery?
Cheers,

David

That's actually a significant question, and I would appreciate advice from anyone who might know.

It seems that when built it was intended for the tube, so I would imagine should be decked out in full LSWR Drummond passenger livery. (??????)

However the version in the kit is a later version, with the cut out on the front end. I cannot establish when those changes occurred, but I gather the machine was relegated to shunting coal wagons very early on it's life. I am assuming it would have been Southern goods black (lined green) after 1923???

Apparently after WW2 it might have been Bulleid green (unlined), but was too dirty to really tell. It didn't bear any number or insignia of any sort.

I could cop out and paint it rust-bucket.....

Given it's complete irrelevance to my layout, (it is complete whimsy), I am tending towards Black lined green like the rest of my goods engines....

When the Waterloo and city was opened the necessary electricity supply was provided by an underground power station at Waterloo, supplied by coal via a wagon lift [separate from the carriage lift], with underground shunting carried out by DS75. DS74 was much bigger, too big, I think, to fit the tunnels, so was presumably used for shunting the coal wagons on the surface [plus, possibly, their collection from Nine Elms and return empty/loaded with ash; I'm speculating here, but DS74 was a bogie loco when DS 75 is not, which seems to imply design for more than just local shunting]. The Waterloo power station was taken out of use in 1917, when the Durnsford Road power station was commissioned; DS74 would then have been redundant at Waterloo, so was presumably transferred at that time. DS75 continued in use for shunting the carriage stock underground. Presumably ?? both would always have been in one or other Goods livery until BR days. Passenger trains were always multiple unit power cars + trailers.

Hi Noel

Thank you for the great info! I can find very little about the loco, so this is excellent.
DS 75 is another weird looking creature - has anyone seen a kit of it anywhere?

Can't help on livery, but maybe this scan from my 1964 Observer's Book of Railway Locomotives of Britain may be of use.

Changed out the Mashima 10:20 for one of Roderick Bruce’s little coreless jobs. Had a good run in of the gearbox - looks slow and smooth to me….

You might like to get hold of a copy of The Southern Way issue 19 as it has some more pictures of DS74 and DS75, all in black & white though.

Issue 53 has one head on view of DS74.

Radley models had a resin body kit of DS75, but since Phil Radley's recent death Radley models is currently in limbo.
