Hornby class 73 vs Dapol class 73

Postby MFD1 » Sat Nov 19, 2022 12:01 am

Dear All,
Having a look at the complications of converting the Dapol 73 to p4 I’d appreciate any thoughts on the Hornby model the old one and the railroad version. I’ve no experience of these and wondered how they compare for conversion ???
Any thoughts gratefully received….
Regards
Michael

I've not converted a Hornby Class 73 to P4, but I have rewheeled one in OO (using the Gibson conversion kit sold for EM) and that was pretty easy to do.

The Hornby loco has 2.5 mm axles which is why you need a dedicated conversion kit rather than just using your favourite type of coach wheels. There's masses of room for wider wheels - hopefully this photo shows this.

The difficult bit was detailing the underframe (especially as the Lima underframe was for a 73/1, even on their 73/0 models, but that's another story)
