RTR (almost) P4 Deltic
Nice to see a manufacturer supporting the wider gauges, Accurascale offering P4 replacement wheelsets for their new Deltic:

Already ordered my wheel sets. Can’t wait to give Meld a spin, hopefully in April.

Agreed, Accurscale approached the Society when they first expressed an interest in doing this and the Committee helped them with the P4 Standards. Since then alot of helpful advice and technical liason has happened between Accurascale and the Committee resulting in their new product having our support.
We are grateful to Accurascale for their understanding and support for P4.
Its great that a mainstream manufacturer is prepared to consider fine-scale modellers in this way and long may it continue and we wish Accurscale success with this and any future ventures they may consider.
It might even encourage others to follow.

Well once my beastie arrives, a running in session on Mostyn beckons methinks.

Sounds like good news for the 37s as well then - I expect there are more people with an excuse for 1 or 2 of those!

Yes. I have two 37s on order and wondered how the P4 wheelsets would be made available and at a reasonable price.too.

Re: RTR (almost) P4 Deltic
I've got 3 Deltics on order which have no place on my layout at all but they are my favourite class. Two 37s on the way as well although, as they did run on the line I'm modelling, I could easily have ordered 5 to renumber as 37001 - 37005.

Re: RTR (almost) P4 Deltic
Hi John.
Not quite. The prototype 37 D6700 was renumbered 37119 after the rest of the split headcode batch, so the first 5 ended at 37004 then jumped to 37119, such were the vagaries of the tops renumbering scheme.
Regards
Tony.

Thanks Tony, just as well I'm planning on renumbering one of them as 003 instead of 005 then

The P4 wheels are due later. They've all sold out (wheels and locos)

I guess there won't be a wholesale rush to offload Bachmann Deltics on eBay.....
That would be an ecumenical matter.

I've checked Gavin Morrison's book Heyday of the Deltics and it looks spot on.

Sorry, I meant that it looks like there's a separate etch windscreen surround and it seems to be coming away from the body (your fifth photo). Hopefully just a trick of the light.

Might be an unflattering photo/ light. I can see what you mean, but the image above it doesn't seem as bad. Only things jumping out to me are the handbrake chain and the rivet/bolt detail on the cab windscreen surrounds, that detail is certainly there on the prototype, but perhaps a little overstated. But I mean, what minuscule things to pick fault with!
I suspect once weathered, I'd struggle to tell the difference between a highly detailed Bachmann upgraded with resin/ 3d printed noses and extreme etchings parts, and I bet the Accurascale works out cheaper!
I think the piece that dropped off seems pretty common among this batch, and is a fuel tank valve.
Any chance of a pic in profile? Something like: from Flikr: ACTON WELLS JUNCTION
Also, when the P4 wheels arrive, some pictures of the drop-on/conversion process, and how all 12 wheels sit (flatness) would be extremely nice to see.
Regards
Matt

Re: RTR (almost) P4 Deltic
I hate to be seen to be picky, but when I saw a video of a running sample, it struck me that the body was sitting too high on its bogies, just like (but perhaps not as much) as the Bachmann model. I thought that might be addressed in production, but now I've seen the production model pictures, it looks the same. Compared to the wonderful prototype picture above, it seems marked and a shame not to have got it right. I suppose it is something to do with having to get the model around train set curves, but I didn't think it was aimed at that market.
For me, the best representation is still Chris Pendlenton's wonderful model.

I suspect your are correct Philip, so I question what has been compromised for this reason? I assume the whole ride height of the locomotive, which will be indicated by the buffer height.

Re: RTR (almost) P4 Deltic
I see the point about the ride height - it looks awful here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vnc3wr_ehyY
This video also shows slightly ill-fitting windscreen surrounds.
I seem to remember there was discussion of the ride height. I think the choices Accurascale were facing were either smaller wheels and scale bogie-to-bodyside gap, or correct size wheels and larger gap. I'd have chosen the former, as I'd rather rewheel than hack about at bogie towers to reduce the gap. I had thought A/S had gone for smaller wheels in the end, but perhaps not.

Hornby opted for both on thier class 50!
I agree with the comment on the handbrake chains. They just look horribly overscale and kinda gimicky. Same with the 37s

Side view here shows the ride height nicely: https://www.accurascale.com/collections/class-55-deltic/products/55017-the-durham-light-infantry
I've had a notification from DHL to say that my 55011 has been delivered along with P4 wheelsets! When I get home from work to try it out I'll have a look at measuring the buffer height.
Cheers,
Liam

55003 was delivered on Saturday, but owing to a mistake at the other end, my P4 wheels only arrived today - in a box almost as big as the one my Deltic shipped in.
Now need to look at re-wheeling at the weekend.

Same here, I’ve mentioned it to Accurascale and they’ve said that perhaps a Jiffy bag may be more appropriate in the future
