Hornby 08 to P4

Postby PeteScR » Wed Mar 01, 2017 10:14 pm

I started to do the Ultrascale conversion following the instructions but I cannot find a way to remove the wiper contact assembly. This is necessary to allow removal of the centre wheel set. I have stripped everything off including the motor assembly and still can't get to it. Any ideas?
Thank you

Has the design changed? My Bachmann 08 has all the pickups above the wheels, they just needed tweaking with tweezers to contact the edges of the flanges and have worked well for years now without adding any extra pickups.
Regards

PS Of course now we know its Hornby my observation here is not relevant, not deleted as quoted below.

I don't know if the design has changed but the contacts are certainly wheel back type. It is the Hornby Network Rail 08 that I am trying to modify.

(this thread seems to have been hijacked towards a discussion on painting for some reason?)

It is the Hornby Network Rail 08

I did wonder, yes the Hornby version has totally different pickups, I seem to remember seeing a bit about converting them somewhere, a bit of searching might help. Meanwhie this needs to be split out of the Bachmann topic into a Hornby topic before the confusion gets worse, I'll do that tonight.

Yes, that's probably where i saw it, the Bachmann is a doddle by comparison.

PS. The confused comments above are a result of this query being originally in the Bachmann 08 topic.

If it helps, there is a guide on how the Hornby 08 was converted to EM available on the Alan Gibson website under "Downloads" / RTR Conversions.

Have a look at my article in Scalefour News on converting 08's.

I devised a pick up template for pick ups and considered making them commercially as It doesn't take long to make them. The design work was considerably longer....

Hardwicke: Which Issue of the news should I be digging out?

Grovenor: out of curiosity....... Bachmann 08? How did you get round the clip in lower brake gear/axle keep mouldings rubbing on the wheels? I'd successfully adjusted the pick-ups but the friction from the mouldings is stopping the job at the moment.

I don't recollect needing to do anything about it. I could have a look tomorrow.

OK. Had a look, I can confirm that I did not have to do anything to the brake gear, the wheels come very close indeed but not rubbing enough to cause any problem. Mine has Ultrascale wheelsets.

Intriguing. I'm using Gibsons and they drag against the mouldings something rotten. Given a b2b and hopefully a wheel standard........ what the heck is giving the variable between the two brands? Methinks this may be Friday afternoon's scientific voyage of discovery.

I've used Gibson and ultra scales on my bachmann 08s without any problems from the brakes.

Sounds daft but your wheels are actually p4 aren't they?

My locomotive tends to screech presumably due to poor meshing between the driven axle gear and the gear box train. I can not see how this can be adjusted, any thoughts?

Have you added any grease?

Mine makes a screech when running fast for a sustained period. It's such a high frequency that I think it can only come from the motor. Lubricating it and the rest of the drivetrain hasn't made any difference, but it doesn't happen when the loco's performing its normal duties so I'll live with it.

Sounds (no pun intended) like the motor has become misaligned. Check and oil/grease it
From Hornby Forum;
"i had the exact same issue with a 08 class. It was due to where i put the decoder. When i popped the loco shell back on, it pushed the decoder in to the motor, which in turn meant that the motor was not precisely positioned any more. Take the body off again, hopefully the motor will move back in to place and the noise will stop."

The screech is a well-known problem with the first batch. There's a thread on RMWeb somewhere giving a fix - just google "Hornby 08 screeching RMWeb" or similar.

My locomotive screeches with out the body in place. But is quiet when only the gear train is operated ie without drive axle present.

Definitely the Hornby, it has finer detail and runs better; don't let the squealing problem put you off. You can re-use the Hornby coupling rods but the chunky Bachmann ones are best replaced with Brassmasters'. However, P4 conversion is slightly harder for the Hornby because of the fragile pick-ups.

Yes: I broke my Hornby pick ups and had to fabricate replacements.
