Hornby Class 35 Hymek Ultrascale wheels

Postby KeithThomas » Sat Nov 21, 2015 5:22 pm

Has anyone done a 'drop-in' Ultrascale wheel conversion on a Hornby Class 35 Hymek? I'm having trouble getting the wheels out!

Yes. I'll have to retrieve it from the attic, though.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Where in the process are you having problems?
IIRC the Hymek is a ringfield motor bogie type like this http://www.hornby.com/uk-en/downloads/view/download/item/44
The body should just unclip from the chassis
then the motor bogie can be dropped out by squeezing the 4 clips round the bogie frame,
then the outer frame can be unclipped from the motor block.
Now you have access to the wheels one wheel on each axle has to be pulled off so you can remove the axles and fit the new ones.
If pulling by hand does not work put a screwdriver in between wheel back and chassis and twist, this will start one of the wheels coming off.

I did one years ago - similar to how Keith describes it. However it was such a poor runner, and then a Heljan one came up cheaply, so I've put the Hornby one away.

Same here, but it worked somewhat better with double motor bogies.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Hi Chaps, Thanks for the replies especially Keith.
I couldn't see how to release the metal chassis from the plastic bogie and thus remove the axles. But I now have managed with the help of the diagram by forcing apart the two wings that clip the bogie into the chassis and leavering with a screwdriver. I wasn't sure how strong the plastic was! Wheels now replaced!
