who do you think provides the best sound chips for the bachmann08 as there seems a lot of different options

I've now standardised on Zimo decoders. They are at the top end of the market, but the control they offer is second to none. If you decide to go down that route, then Paul Chetter's class 08 soundfile (http://www.digitrains.co.uk/ecommerce/d ... unter.aspx) is likely to be at least as good as any other. While I haven't heard the 08, I've got his DigiDrive 2.0 for a Bachmann class 24 and it is excellent and adds an extra dimension to driving the loco.

Decoder wise, I don't think there is any significant difference in potential performance between ESU and Zimo for a 4mm scale loco. There will be differences in recordings and how they are setup to play on the sound decoder, so the specific suppliers will sound different. Choice and quality of mounting of speakers will also make a large difference - the same recording can sound very different through different speaker setups.
