small pony wheels

Postby essdee » Mon Mar 20, 2023 12:43 pm

Calling any scratchbuilders of small industrials, or machinists with time on their hands.....

I need to source a six-spoke trailing wheelset of only a nominal 2ft 2.75ins diameter, for a SDJR 'Radstock Dazzler' 0-4-2ST ; see attached image. This is smaller than anything in the Gibson range and below the minimum diameter for an Ultrascale bespoke wheel rim order, as a minimum 'start', unfortunately.

Does anyone have any ideas on from whom/where such a 'beast' might be obtained, please?! I am happy to pay someone for a one-off if necessary.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Steve

I would try Brian at Branchlines. He has a weird and wonderful selection of things.

You might look at 2mm scale wheels as they would be 4ft 5.5" which is a reasonable size for a goods loco in that scale. If you found a 12 spoke it would just require you to remove alternate spokes, and if you found an N guage wheelset you could turn the flange down with a drill and a file.

What about a TT/3mm scale wagon wheel?

Thanks gents, for the prompt responses, I will follow-up on all of these. I particularly like the prompts to try outside 4mm scale...
By the way, here is the image which should have been attached to my OP, but was omitted while the Talktalk shenanigans was intermittently still occurring.
Cheers,

Steve

Tim - why the delay - it took you all of twelve minutes for your reply!!

Seriously though; yes, I have pondered that several times in recent years - but with a sea of plywood trackbeds for Braysdown now assembled in the railway room, I simply have to forge ahead with existing skills to get track laid and my stock running at last. Not to mention painting it....... Jen has been amazingly forbearing of my prolonged baseboard onslaught over the last six months, and a large garden is needing TLC on top of everything else......

A good thought though!

Cheers

I have some 9 mm dia 6 spoke wheels going spare, if I could find them!
But unfortunately for you they are driving wheels with moulded in crankpins Sharman style.

Have you looked at Sharman wheels - which lists a 9mm 8 spoke ?

For a future project I will need 1' 9" wheels, and did wonder if wheels intended for 2mm scale would work.

Looks like a candidate for 3D printing the centre, and fitting into a turned steel tyre. Given the extremely chunky nature of the tyre area, the turning work should be simple, and the 3D print won't be complex.

Expensive part - buying printer. Cheaper option, find someone who owns a resin printer and interest them in doing more than printing the test-object which came with the printer.

Thanks again chaps, plenty to mull over there - and thanks for the tyre-turning offer Jeremy; may well be taking you up on that.
I had been thinking about David Lane's wheel-printing thread as well.... had forgotten Sharmans!

OK, need to do some more searches among the 2mm and 3mm fraternity first, but there iare clearly several possibilities.

Cheers,

Steve

I thought David Bigcheeseplant, of this parish, did an any wheel service.

Cheers Phil.
