Hi,
Does anyone have a view on the quality/issues with Comet models generally and the IVATT 2MT 2-6-0 specifically? I'm thinking of buying one very soon and just wondered if anyone had a view?
Thanks
Terry

John Brighton has built a number of these and was very complimentary.
See the portfolio section of the website.

As with any kit, there are some issues, I'm pleased to say I found very few and it makes up into a very nice little model.
Mine has American pickup, sprung using Brassmasters hornblocks, with a sprung tender and front truck. A basic Mashima motor and a high level gearbox. Nothing fancy.

Aren't they still available from Comet?

Very neat little kit; acquired two unbuilt ones quite cheaply.
There are one or two minor things that could occur, e.g.
- have a look at the smokebox/boiler/firebox casting (it is a single casting), which can appear slightly oval at the front of the smokebox. This does not happen on every sample of the kit!
- watch also for mould part line/flaw which will need scraping off and filing smooth. This line also partly runs through the section which sits on the smokebox saddle, so be careful that you're not taking off the rivet detail there;
- tender base may need opening out so that there is clearance for P4/S4 wheelsets (you need scale 3'6.5" if building the Ivatt as the kit intends)
I'm looking at building one of the pair as the later BR Standard 2MT (which is not catered for in the kit), so this means modifications to:
- cab / cab front
- tender / tender axleboxes (the tender wheels are slightly smaller, at 3'3.5" dia.)
- front footplate section
- clacks / ejectors
- chimney
....amongst other things.

That would be an ecumenical matter.

As far as I know, this kit was the last purchase I made from Chris Challis when he still had the shop in Shepton Mallett!
